96-98 muffler?

What options does a person have to adding a performance type muffler to the goofy 2 into 1 setup I have on my 98?
I want to change just the muffler and I do own a welder......just looking for some ideas. I'm not going to switch to duals.

Re: 96-98 muffler?

Cut the old muffler out and weld the new muffler in, vwalla.

You have many options for mufflers, here's a few from Magnaflow.

There's also Borla, Spintech, Corsa etc,,,,,,,,

Re: 96-98 muffler?

I guess if I didn't have TWO pipes entering the muffler and ONE leaving it then it would be just that simple.........

Anyone eles?

I guess what I'm looking for is any ideas or ways that others may have done this since I'm sure someone must have before. I thought maybe someone in the aftermarket would have made a dual in/single out muffler that a person could just cut out the stock one and bolt in a new one but I can't seem to find one.

Re: 96-98 muffler?

There are plenty of 2 into one mufflers, here's Summit's list: http://www.summitracing.com/search/P...Ns=Price%7cAsc

Also for cheaper options, just use a single inlet/dual outlet muffler that's reversable like a Magnaflow. Here's all Summit's listing but keep in mind you'll have to find one that can be reversed, sometimes it'll say if it is, i'd ask around or call if you're not sure, before you buy it:

I wasnt being a smart ass when answering you. That is a very common question. Basically thats all you do, cut the old out and weld in the new one. I'm pretty sure all Chevys have di/so mufflers to. A lot of people go the dual route with a di/do muffler but since you have said you dont want to go that route find a di/so muffler. If you get a shorter case you'll need some extra tubing to fill in blank.
As for what muffler, thats up to you. I preffer Magnaflow so I provided you with there site to check out there mufflers. Its very informative and gives you everything from case size to full dimensions and offset to. Another advantage about Magnaflow is most if not all of there mufflers are reversable.
Another option is to use the search button, its your freind.

Here's a little more info for yah. Google is your friend to

Thanks for your help. I guess I was reading into it wrong the first time, sorry.
I did try multiple searches before I posted, but I didn't find anything that I was looking for.
I also did Google it, but I admit others get better results :)

That is one thing I have been contemplating for a while also. I was gonna go to a local garage that does exhaust work and see if they could build me something cheap in the way of a Y that would be cheap.

Re: 96-98 muffler?

I have the same magnaflow too and love it, you can usually get a used one on ebay or cragislist. I wanted a valid warranty so I got it here. Magnaflow 36438. Also some of the forum sponsors usually have a sale going on. Either way its a great exhaust system, sounds great, and very easy to install.

Re: 96-98 muffler?

I think it'd be easier to get a di/do muffler and just get tails made and have true duals. You'll have a wider range of mufflers to choose from, most likely cheaper and/or better sounding options too.

What exactly is this(Magnaflow 36438)? I clicked on the link and it shows a price but I don't even know what it is. Is it a dual exhaust setup......just a muffler.....what is it?

From what I have seen going by their prices, I seriously doubt I'll be buying a Magnaflow

Re: 96-98 muffler?

If you really don't want duals just go with the di/so muffler and be done with it but be sure you make the right muffler selection because the sound and highway drone can vary. Summit Racing sells quite a few for your truck so you shouldn't have a problem finding 1.

Re: 96-98 muffler?

i just chopped off my muffler and used dual bullet mufflers and paid my exhaust shop 180bucks to put the pipes out the rear for true duals. sounds great... but i need new pipes after i lowered my truck since i raised the rear end they wouldnt clear.
i need to get them rebent and put back on i just dont have the money to do so right now. but if you have a welder hell just make your own Y pipe.... just use 2 45degree pipes put them on the stock pipes and mark the center where they would cross, cut em and weld em together, then get a pipe big enough to fit around both pipes that are welded together and mark the pipes with the straight pipe over them, cut off the end and weld the straight pipe onto the back... sounds like alot more work yes but not really that much work.
i tried buying a Y pipe for my truck and the pipes where still off about 1-2inches, thats main reason why i just paid my exhaust shop to put the pipes out the rear and keep it true duals.

with the single inlet and outlet they have alot more choices when it comes to mufflers and a easy fit.

Which is why I said just get 2 muflers and have an H-pipe welded in with duals out the back. That will sound the best, no question but a di/do muffler would be cheapest as you only buy 1 muffler and you don't need an H-pipe with it. Either way, it'll sound and look better than a single outlet, and you'll have lots more muffler choices. More than likely you'll be able to find a better sounding si/so or di/do mufflers than a di/so, and they'll be cheaper.

Also if anyone tries to tell you you'll get better torque with a single outlet, you'll get just as much with dual 2.25" outlets.

Re: 96-98 muffler?

I'm not against trying to make my own Y, but I also was hoping to walk in the local autozone and find a couple 2" elbows and a straight piece of 3" and make a custom one. Too bad they didn't have anything worth crap there to work with. I think they had like 1 piece of 2" pipe and it wasn't even an elbow.
Jegs has some U shaped pieces of 2" pipe and I'll probably just end up ordering one, cutting it and adding a short piece of 3" to make my own Y. Then I can just get any single in/single out muffler I choose.
I can't believe with the number of these trucks on the road that they don't just have a muffler built so a person can do this and have it slip on the existing pipes and be on the right centers/etc.
I'm not exactly 'new' to making things work on a car/truck, just thought there'd be more of an aftermarket option is all.
Thanks to everyone for their replies and sorry for dragging out a topic that I'm sure probably has been beaten to death already......

EDIT: 88Vic, I understand what you are saying BUT I initially was/am still just looking for a cheap way to add enough sound to my truck without altering the entire exhaust system (going to duals/ect).
Honestly, I was hoping someone might have posted that 'magical link' to a muffler that would bolt right on after cutting the stock one off.

Re: 96-98 muffler?

ya it would be nice if they made a simple install setup but they dont guess it wasnt a good idea worth the money for a specific model product...
but it could be worse... at least we got a bunch of room under the truck to put the mufflers of our choice! ;)
hell it would have been nice if a Y pipe manufacture just built Y pipes for stock pipes to go to singles! then you could just measure your pipes and order the right size spaced apart setup!
