Re: dumped

Dumps sound deeper and "richer" than full pipes. I think full pipes are actually louder than dumps. The exhaust sound carries more with pipes. I always go with dumps, I think they sound better and they save you a lot of money at the exhaust shop.

Re: dumped

I think the shortest possible exhaust will be the loudest.

Turndowns are supposed to be louder than just a pipe, because they send the exhaust to the ground. That is supposed to create an echo affect. And make it a little louder.

Re: dumped

i had both on my old 91 explorer and dumped was louder & fuller-sounding than with the tail pipe. from what i understand, though, dumping will lose a little torque in the low end.

ps - turn downs will be a real pain if you like a clean vehicle & ever drive on dirt roads

Re: dumped

losing low end power with dumps is bull ****, that's not gonna change power output. I think pipes are louder to other people. Dumps are louder in the cab because the exhaust resonates under the truck. Overall I think pipes are louder and dumps sound cooler. Why the F would it be hard to keep stuff clean with dumps? Thats never been a problem for me?????

Re: dumped

my statement about power was just something i read about a guy who replaced his dumps with pipes. something about the added back pressure helping the low end. here's the thread - http://www.fullsizechevy.com/forums/...fter-axle.html my explorer didn't have enough power to feel a difference if there was any. i only had the sierra a day before i cut the pipes off & i did the muffler at the same time, so there wasn't a real A/B comparison.

the thing about turn downs being "dirtier" is that they blow the exhaust straight onto the ground, thus blowing a dirt cloud out from under the bed (at least on a low 2wd truck). that was my friend's biggest complaint about his F150 (built 351 with dual turn downs at the axle). he lives on a dirt road & we worked at a horse show arena with a dirt road entrance & gravel parking lots. every time he started it up, you could see the dust rolling out. now, if you drive on pavement all the time or have lots of ground clearance, it won't be a problem

that's all i was saying

Re: dumped

personally i don't like the sound of exhaust just being dumped. the sound just doesn't seem to travel as nicely as when you have pipes.

Re: dumped

When I picked the exhaust for my Scrambler, I just wanted it as loud as I could get it and still be legal. I use Headman Headers, ThunderBolt cats, Cherry Bomb Extremes, and turndowns. Sounds great, has tons of drone and I think the only way it could sound better is if it was open headers.

Re: dumped

it depends on if you like in cab noise really. dumps are great but it will increase the level of noise inside your cab. I suggest adding about a foot or so of pipe and dump it right before the rear axle. Its not quite as loud inside the cab and all, especially on a low to the ground truck. One that is higher up it doesnt affect inside the cab as much.

Re: dumped

everything depends on how it is setup and if done correctly. dumped has never sounded as loud or as good of a tone as full pipes. most people think dumped is awesome because it sounds neat in the truck and is loud in the cab. dumped can have nice tones and be fairly loud, but cannot touch full pipes. the only thing to be gained from dumping the exhaust is a "clean" look out the rear or from the sides. sound quality and volume cant compete.

Exactly, the exhaust on my truck sounds immensly better with it pointing out the side instead of turned down. Before it would just bounce off the ground and underbody and just drone/vibrate like crazy, but once it was pointing out the side I put my tips on it and now the sound is so much cleaner. It's a lot quieter inside and it doesn't make that echoing sound, just a deep rumble. I only wish it were out the back, it's in front of the axle like the Gibson Supertruck exhaust since the tails were too rusty to reuse and I didn't feel like buying some, but i'm completely satisfied with it now.

Take my advise, i've tried many setups with turndowns and dumped straight out of the muffler and none even compare to when it exits out the side or especially straight out the back.

Re: dumped

The only time Ive had a issue with droning/vibrating is when I'm in a parking garage. I can make the bed rattle at idle.

Any other time though, its great. I love the sound of the dumps when I step on it from a stop, it just sounds nice. I have no droning or vibrating while cruising on the highway. Is it louder than when I had pipes out the back? Yes. Can I carry on a normal conversation with the windows down and not have to yell over the exhaust noise? Yes. Are my tires still louder than my exhaust? Yes.

Re: dumped

I guess.

In the end, its all a matter of opinion. I like the sound of my dumps. Maybe its because I have a DI/DO, maybe its because I have a lifted truck, I dunno, but I have no reason not to want to run the dumps before the axle.

Everybody likes something different though, so its all good.
