2004 4.3 needs exhaust
My cats clogged up and I had to cut them off. So know Im running stock muffler, stock manifolds and straight pipe between the manifolds and the muffler then out to a 6'' deisel tip.
I need a muffler, this truck sounds gay as fck. I know its a V6, but I drve to work and haul quads or snowmachnes it does what I need it for. I have heard some throaty V6's and some sexy V6's so I need advice as to what muffler, poss headers to run to get my sound back. Before it was all stock and quiet and was good. But know it needs something badly.
Dont tell me swap a V8 cause Im not going to. Who would make a good muffler for my truck. Price isnt really a factor because its worth it to not sound like RICE. Thanks

Re: 2004 4.3 needs exhaust
I had bad luck with a Gibson cat back kit, but some have had great luck with them. Some will say Flowmaster, Magnaflow, Thrush, etc. You just need to get that stock 55 gallon drum out and lose the 6" tip that's waaaaayyyy too big.
Go to a shop, have them dump it behind the axle and throw a tip on there for some resonance.
Headers won't do much unless you're going to use longtubes, which I have not seen too readily available for the 4.3. Shorties would add some torque, but since you're going for sound, just start at the muffler and work back toward the block.

Re: 2004 4.3 needs exhaust
Flowmaster Super 40 sounded the most agressive on my '04 when it was a V6. And it didn't have that buzzing bee rasp to it.
For a quieter v6, the dynomax super turbo sounded really good too

Re: 2004 4.3 needs exhaust
silveradomykk- I remember when your truck had a V6 and damn it sounded good. SO Flowmaster super 40 is loud and the dyno max is more tone but not much noise, do both lose the RICE. IIRC you had your manifolds to a muffler and out the side right? How would a regular 40 series sound?
spanky- 6'' tip makes the ass of the truck mang, no really it was a joke at first and I never changed it.
I was thinking running new exhaust from the collector under the cab since i need a donut there, to a S40 or dynomax, then to the top of the axle with a chrome tip pointed down a little bit, but leave it out of sight if possible.
I may just buy some performance cats and leave the rest, i have to add up the prices

Re: 2004 4.3 needs exhaust
I'd say throw a cat on it, you said it's worth it not to sound like rice so if you want to hear it a bit but not have the snappy, popping ricer sound at higher rpm get yourself a cat and then a $20 turbo muffler. It'll have a bit of a rumble when you get on it, but crusing and idle it'll sound stock. More importantly turbo muffler flow very well so it's worth it.
Btw how did your cat get clogged up? My van has over 150K, it's a 93 and it's running rich and I still have the original cat as it's not clogged up yet. Is your O2 sensor functioning properly?

Re: 2004 4.3 needs exhaust
idk about the cats, I have around 100k, my dad has 120k+ on his '03, my old bose '02 or '04 burb, have all have had this problem, everyone else we now drive lease vehicles, but they just clog up I guess. The muffler shop said its a common problem on these trucks and it is usually one side or the other but both of mine we clogged. He said he did one last week from the dealer

Re: 2004 4.3 needs exhaust
Then I suggest investing in a decent highflow cat such as a Magnaflow. I have a Thunderbolt cat on mine, it muffles the sound about as much as a glasspack and flows like a straight pipe but I don't know how long it'll last, i've only put maybe a thousand miles on it so far. If it clogs up, oh well i'll just put a straight pipe in place since we have no emissions/inspection and I have no O2 sensor after or on the cat.
