Jingle between cat and headers

When I start my truck, or just at idle, a jingle sound comes from the area near the cat. Nothing is loose, all is tight as can be... but i just cannot understand why it sounds like this. Took off entire cat back and it still continued.

Any suggestions?

Re: Jingle between cat and headers

my best guess is your cat itself.

this is a sign your cat is going bad. min had a jingle/rattle for a month or so before it clogged up and the truck would not even run.

but to be safe, look at your collectors, make sure they are still in tack, i have seen some of them break a bolt or two and cause a jingle as well

Re: Jingle between cat and headers

When the exhaust is cold, crawl under and pound the cats with your hand. I bet your driver side cat will replicate the sound. A friend of mine who has a 99 NBS with the 5.3 rattles at idle and it's coming from the driver side cat. Mine doesn't rattle at idle, but I can replicate the sound you describe by hitting the exhaust in that area with my hand. It's the internal brick of the cat that is rattling in there and it's a non-issue until either a check engine light comes on with a code indicating that a cat is bad, or a portion of the cat's internal brick becomes detached and lodges itself sideways in there and prevents flow. If that happens, you will know because your symptoms will be similar to what Underpowered mentioned in his reply.

Re: Jingle between cat and headers

+1 on it being the cat itself. seems they like to break down inside of themselves, thus hearing the rattling noises.

Re: Jingle between cat and headers

It seems that the stock cats on these trucks aren't very good quality. Mine has already broken up and was shooting out pieces when I got it so I put a pipe in it's place which got rid of the clunking sound and not to mention made me finally hear the 24" Magnaflow.

Re: Jingle between cat and headers

no check engine light. It isn't a crazy loud sound, most of my friends dont pay attention to it unless i point it out, and only happens when i let off the gas or have it at idle.

Also, when I drive around town for a while and park to go in somewhere, while the engine is still warm, the noise goes away when i start it back up again.

Re: Jingle between cat and headers

I had the same problem on my 99 NBS. It turned out to be a flange ear (or something like that) that holds the exhaust system on was loose and I had both of them replaced and it went away.

OR

The honeycomb inside your cat has come loose or broke?

Re: Jingle between cat and headers

I had the same issue on a 03 Avalanche with the 5.3L. Took it to the dealer, and something had come loose in the cat itself. They had to replace the cat (under warranty, thank goodness!) and that took care of it.
