thinkin of going forced
best bang for the buck as far as forced induction goes.

vortech superchargers seem to be the best priced, but hwo is the performance of them?

i don't want to spend and insane amound of money on one, and am not looking for a super fast truck. just want a good power increase over stock, and better towing. any thoughts?

this is jsut an idea as of now, if it can be done for a reasonable amount without alot of custom work, i will end up doing it.

Its like a turbo being driven off the serp. belt. It takes rpm to make boost, doesnt really help with low rpm at all.

Whipples are good, but for completness of a package, teh Magnacharger Radix is the a very popular choice.

i really like the STS rear mount turbo though.

I think they are 5-6k

If you go boosted you have to remember everything else as well. tuning, trans, rear end, blah blah blah...

Umm, superchargers are for torque. They build boost right off the line. Turbo's have to wait for the air to go through the motor and spool the turbo.

He was referring to vortech's supercharger design which isnt the typical design. Just for clarification, turbos build boost by exhaust velocity, superchargers' boost is related to throttle angle.

Vortech's are centrifugal. What about that?

Do you want a centrifugal or positive displacement supercharger?

Superchargers relate to RPM's. The faster your motor spins the faster the SC spins.

The drive gears on a SC are made so that the SC spools up at low RPM.

If your thottle is open only a little bit then that little amount of air entering your engine has to spool the turbo. Small amount of air has low velocity which doesn't spin the turbo up. Turbo lag.

if you get the system from sts its $5k for the kit, then you can do upgrades (bigger turbo, intercooler, etc) and that turns out to be quite i bit more. i think just the turbo upgrade is another $600. Best bet is to just be on the lookout for a used sts and intercooler on ebay.

Re: thinkin of going forced
well i missed a used vortec a few weeks back, complete kit sold for only $900.

if i am gonna spend 5-6k on one, i will get whipple or a radix.

as for the other stuff, i know i am gonna need atleast a retune, but for the upgraded driveline i plan on replacing it as it goes.

Re: thinkin of going forced
Vortec super chargers are pretty good for a centrifigel supercharger. Now MagnaCharger produce more power at close to the same price. Plus MagnaCharger is more direct, like the old school superchargers. Vortec Superchargers have alittle bit cooler air plus are better at higher speeds but doesn't creat the torque curve a MagnaCharger. You just have to research them alittle and figure out what is best suited to your driving habits. Just something to think about.

Re: thinkin of going forced
after doing some research, the STS is not even in consideration.

being my truck is 4wd, and gets used as a 4wd i am afraid that i could damage the turbo since it is under the truck.

Vortechs or any other centrifugals make crappy boost at low engine rpms, nothing like a positive displacement Roots type, like a Magnacharger or even more effecient, the Whipple or Autorotor Screwcharger.

Turbos can spool just fine at small throttle opensings, much beter than superchargers can. Supers are directly related to engine rpm, while turbos are related to engine load. You can have high load on an engine at low rpm.
Trust me, lb for pound turbos make more torque than centrifugal superchargers, esp at low rpm.

Re: thinkin of going forced
Turbo in my opinion, is the way to go. They burn no fuel until the wastegate opens, is not pulley driven, and has no maintenance. I know STS is out of the question, but you can get a kit pretty cheap if you piece it together yourself. Just use a premade kit as a reference and get someone to fab the header system for you.
