Another crazy turbo idea
I have heard about an older trans am that came with a (70-80ish) 301ci turbo, they made about 60 horse over the regular 301. I found that garrett makes the turbos, but i cant find any of the piping, adapters, or any of that crap. Any idea's? Twin Turbos? I would be pretty stoked if there was some sort of turbo kit for a carb'd sb chev out there but all of them seem to be for EFI

I believe you are reffering to the 89 TTA trans-am with a 3.8l V6 and turbo. Same motor as a buick I think GNX or something. It was supposed to be the fastest production Trans-am made. It's a very rare car. Value is starting to go up quick.

Re: Another crazy turbo idea
Nope, he's referring to the '79-'80 Turbo T/A, as seen in the last Smokey & The Bandit movie.
Yep, it was a sorry a** 301 cubic inch engine, with a Garrett T3 turbo, making 9 pounds boost. Horsepower was about 210? (Net)
Put a B&M shift kit in one of those things, back in the day. Had to show the driver how to launch the car, as turbo lag was something new to most fellas. (Put both the gas and brake pedals to the floor while in "Drive", when the light goes green, no lag.)
The Garrett T3 is a really small unit, barely big enough, even for the 301. Definately too small for a carb'ed 350. There is an excellent website for turbo'ed bikes, but the charts and application lists are universal to all engines. I recommend checking it out to get the proper sized turbo for a carb'ed 350. www.rbracing-rbr.com There is a good book available on e-bay as well, which deals with carb'ed applications; HP Books, "Turbochargers" by Hugh MacInnes

Re: Another crazy turbo idea
That car was low on power, but put out similar torque to a 455 bigblock IIRC. It was teh heads on that 301 engine that made it wheeze.

Re: Another crazy turbo idea
I believe banks engineering makes a universal Carb turbo kit.

The reason most are EFI is because its so much easier to control fuel for the setup since you have a MAP sensor and 02s that allow the engine to adjust to different conditions.
