confused and cluttered with information!
Ok guys, I've been reading a lot and still I am not sure what I need to tune my OBD1.
there are a lot of great articles out there but I still have no direction.
If you guys could get a thread going on general definitions of "burning words"(like what the heck is a mask?) and whats needed to burn a chip and then whats needed to "flash" a chip that would be a great start, at least for me.
I know if I want to flash the chip I think I need to purchase a chip that will allow to be flashed; but then how would I go about getting the info from the stock chip and putting it on the new flash chip?
I would love to be able to flash instead of removing the chip every time I had to change something. And I understand that there is a STEEP learning curve, and to take little steps so I don't cook my engine.
So I don't mind researching and doing hands on tuning but I need direction.
I will list what I have: 1990 K1500 GMC, 5 speed, USED to be 350 but now 305(long story).
I have changed the chip to 305,5 speed, 4X4.ECM is 7747 chip is ASDN (1613 9497)
the 305 has heads from L69, 3 angle valve job, new guides.
cam is the WEAK 305 cam for a 1990 305.
305 knock sensor.
I elongated the intake bolt holes to work with the old style heads.
pistons are flat top.
I am using the 350 injectors because the 305 injectors were WAY lean with the new heads.
I have the timing at a base of 8 or 10 * (can't remember which) running 91 octane fuel.
It runs OK but definitely needs a tune.
I have an AUTO Xray scanner/reader (1000 updated to a 5000), can I DATA log with this? I know it has capture mode but is it worth it?
I would really like to get something that can DATA log and flash the chip(new chip).
what would I need for the "tools". I've looked at cables but have NO idea which one to get!
I've looked at the TunerPro and (RT), down loaded it and now have no idea how to even start it because I don't know what it needs to make it work.
THANK YOU for any input, and yes I am still reading!!!!!!

Re: confused and cluttered with information!
SLDHD7, the easy way to datalog is with a laptop, and one of these setups
http://www.moates.net/product_info.p...roducts_id=127
Then download the XDF from moates for the 7747 ECM and you can datalog. I have found that datalogging is a good way to get to know how you engine is running. The moates site has lots of info on what you need to setup your ECM for flashing the PROM as well as all the hardware you need ( no I don't work for or represent them) ou might also look at EFILive's offerings as they are very slick. Good Luck and let us know how things work out

Re: confused and cluttered with information!
Thanks guys,
I have read the stickies, and am still a little confused as where to start.
I did do a "data log" today with my Auto Xray using the capture mode. It was pretty cool but I still "really" don't know what I am looking at; but I did decipher it some, and found out it is lean. The block learn was 138 telling me it is running lean and is adding fuel. And the INT is 129. The knock sensor had counted from 9 to 10 in about 5 min of driving.
But right now I need to go read drummers sticky!!

Re: confused and cluttered with information!
First you will need to gather the necessary info about your ECM. The numbers are on the unit itself. You need the part# as well as a 4 letter code (.bin ID). The mask is a series of commands (a program that defines) hexadecimal (BIN files) into real world numbers (.xdf files for TP RT). A mask will have associated BIN files that it defines.
Edit: .ads files are a mask that allow filepath & definition between your laptop & ECU.

Re: confused and cluttered with information!
Now go spend the best $30 for a tool you can & download TunerPro RT.
while your surfing around get your bin, xdf & ads files. Set up tunerpro, load the .bins, .xdf and .ads for your rig and read the help info. WinALDL is a free datalogger but that's all it does. There are free .bin editors if your good at hexadecimal chit. The guys that use them would be better able to say than I.

Re: confused and cluttered with information!
You will need a cable to tap the ALDL socket under the dash ALDLcable.com or that moates piece. Lots of guys have built their own, if your into it. After you get friendly with TunerPro & the ECU then think about an emulator/chip burning & such.

Re: confused and cluttered with information!
Well I did it...... I bought the APU1 from Moates.Net! Now I have a nice learning curve to face with out burning up my engine(i hope)!!! I also got the G2 adaptor and the ZIF socket, I hope that's all I need to get going. Thanks for all the input! Tom
