5.3 vs Nissan Frontier
Well I was out at the bar with two buddies last night and my two friends were arguing over what truck was faster, mine or the other friend's new Nissan Frontier Nismo V6 6 speed

I did not bother taking part in this argument because I havn't the slightest clue about anything with those frontiers, but I do know my truck has a 0-60 of about 10 minutes with my 3.42 gears.

My two friends bet $20 and we are to race when the track opens in march. The frontier will probably have an intake and a cat back by then, and I'm trying to convince him to spend the money for a tune.

I have no idea what I should run, let alone him. Any ideas? 1/4 mi track

Biggest factor will be if he has the factory turbo or not!!

I dont think nissian frontiers come with a "factory turbo" I think you can option for a supercharger but im not sure. I do know they have some pretty stout little v6's under the hood though.

exactly right, i believe the SC is a option.. that would be something else if it was SC... but then again, i doubt it, he prob just has the v6 stick.. still just that will do lots of damage, and may give you a run for the $$..

my buddy is a huge Nissan guy, and their motors are stout, especially with the stick option.. heck the v4s are stout with the stick..

im going out on a limb here, but if he knows how to drive that stick, and he has just the v6, he would still take ya if you dont be careful... if he has the SC, then forget about it!

your best bet, would be custom tune, no TQ management, and correct gears...

Re: 5.3 vs Nissan Frontier
nothing on the Nissan website mentions any FI for it from the factory, but either way, he doesn't have it.

I have a custom tune and no TM but my 3.42's still don't let me off the line in a hurry.

Re: 5.3 vs Nissan Frontier
The newest frontiers have the 4.0 engine in them. It is derived from the same 3.5 that powers the 350Z. They can and will run like hell. I don't think the Fullsize chevy stands a chance against the 260 HP V6 in the much lighter frontier. The older 3.3L V6 with the supercharger is a turd compared to the 4.0 though. The newest 4.0 is NOT available with a supercharger.

Re: 5.3 vs Nissan Frontier
I raced a crew cab 4wd frontier with the super-charged motor with my 2wd 00' silverado 5.3 reg cab long bed. left him in the dust. That was in 2001 when they were 210hp, I don't know what they run now

Re: 5.3 vs Nissan Frontier
i totally agree that the 3.3 supercharged motor is a turd. My last truck was a 03 frontier crew cab with the 3.3 NA motor and it sucked only 190 hp and the supercharger was onlt 205 hp. I test drove one and could not tell much differance so i bought the cheaper truck. but yes the 4.0 in the new frontier is very nice, will roast the hell out of some tires

Re: 5.3 vs Nissan Frontier
I still can't believe he paid more for the Frontier. Specs wise, his engine seems pretty powerful but it actually gets worse gas mileage. This makes me wonder why not just go for a Colorado w/ a 5.3L

What size tires are you running? I agree 3.42's suck. Been there done that.

the Crew Cab 4x4's though? I'm not doubting you but when people say a generic statement like that, they are usually refering to the fastest/lightest truck possible.

But if you are right that his 6 sp 4.0L 4x4 crew cab can run low 15's.... I wouldn't have a chance. I probably run what...a low 17?

Re: 5.3 vs Nissan Frontier
I made 3 passes about 2 years ago at a 1/4 mi. track with about a All stock 2003 model V6 not sure what size and I beat him off the line and gained about 2.5 to 3 truck lengths and he would stay there. It was the same all 3 runs and that was 32" BFG AT and 3.73s, & CAI, Single to Y dual out no muffler. I can't remember the times i wanna say they were all 16.8s but don't hold me to that!
