cracked tranny case (pics inside)
96 Z71, 350, 4L60E.
Tranny was just fully built so please no (now is a good time to build it up comments). You can imagine my excitement to find I still have this leak after getting it rebuilt. I didn't know it was cracked when I first pulled it out and decided to build it up, I thought it was blowing the fluid out of the vent. The vent tube was wet and I thought it was coming from the tube and then getting flung everywhere from the front drive shaft. When I put it on jack stands and let it idle in reverse nothing comes out. Put it in drive and immediately it starts leaking and will be dripping from the pan within a minute or 2. After I had driven it it looks as though it will actually spray out of the crack as there is fluid on the bottom of the floor and on the wiring harness above the crack. I'm pretty sure it was caused by a bent drive shaft, which has since been replaced. Could this be fixed by welding it without removing the tranny or even with JB Weld or does the case have to be replaced? |

Never mind it's coming out, I've done too much to this truck to half ass anything now.

Re: cracked tranny case (pics inside)
It could be welded, however i wouldn't really recommend it as who knows what was done to any passages internally. It could be caused from a number of things including a bent driveshaft, bottoming the truck out on something, etc as its right at the mounting flange prettymuch. It sucks thats for sure.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was from the drive shaft, but that's been replaced now. After I thought about what you were saying when you ran it up, I realized that it must be under stress. As it didn't leak in reverse (closing the gap) but it did immediately in drive (opening the gap). I've been searching for hours about this and found some other pics on here of some broken in the same spot, all though they were way worse then mine. The last thing I need is for it to open up when I'm 8 hours from home on the highway, considering that's where this thing will see most of it's use. |

Re: cracked tranny case (pics inside)
I had the same thing happen to my 95 z71 a couple years ago, i was on my way back home from tennessee and was about 15 miles away from my house when i noticed tranny starting to slip. i pulled over and fluid was dripping from everywhere. guy at trans shop said they were a common problem with four wheel drives cause of all the weight from the transfer case puts alot of stress on the rear of the tranny. it ended up burning up everything inside so i had to get a whole new trans
