4l60e reliability
are these trannies behind the 5.3 in the newer trucks just as bad as the old ones. say if i added 100HP and a lift and tires but did regear would i still expect to have a tranny go on me fairly easily? i read allot about how these are crappy trannies but im unclear if they fixed them at all behind the 5.3?

Re: 4l60e reliability
It may hold up to that but not for very long imo. Get a shift kit, servos, when you have the PCM tuned remove torque management and convert to synthetic fluid (only if you get the shift kit though).

Thats about as strong as they will get without going for a built unit, or a 4l80e.

Re: 4l60e reliability
I got 150k out of my stock 02 trans. They were NOT easy miles either. That includes towing an enclosed sled trailer every weekend in the winter through the mountains with it searching for the right gear constantly.

If its loud, fast and runs on flammable liquid......count me in.
LQ9, 11:1 compression, Edelbrock/Lingenfelter heads, 224/224 5xx/5xx 1xx+ cam, 44lb injectors edelbrock headers, 3000 yank stall, flt 4l65e lvl5 trans, WHEATLEY tuned

Re: 4l60e reliability
i just wish they made a 2500 with a 5.3, it would easily be able to move the bigger truck, ford and dodge put there 1/2 motors in the heavy duty trucks but not chev. i want a heavy duty truck that is half-ass decent for mileage. i guess wat i got is about the best i will get in a chev without goin diesel.

I have 279 000 km's on my 1996 4x4. always changed fluid and always stomping on it and redlining! Even off Roading still no issues. Hands down great transmission.

Re: 4l60e reliability
When it fails have them put HD parts in it.

My 4l60e lasted me 43,000 miles with the 4.8. adding hp will only make it worse.

Re: 4l60e reliability
I could only imagine if you put heavy duty parts in it like the 4l65...

I dont understand how some people have really bad luck with these transmissions. I must have a GM experimental tranmission hahah

Make Sure you put a big Fat Trasmission cooler on the front of your RAD :) that baby will gooo for soo long as long as you make a complete stop when shifting from reverse to forward etc.

I AGREE 100%!! This is a huge opportunity for GM!

My uncle has a NBS 1999 Sierra 2500 (8600 gwv) w/ a 5.3L, ext cab, 8' bed. It has PLENTY of power and it's the ONLY one I've ever seen!!

I think you might start to see the 5.3L
s in the 3/4 ton chevy's if these gaas prices stay the way they are!!
2003 Silverado Z-71 ecsb, 5.3L, 3.73, 265/75/16 Bridgestone Dueler 693(oem); Magnaflow 3" SI/SO Cat Back(p/n15778) and now waiting for Justin's tune!

For Sale: $1500 '89 K1500 eclb w/ 7.5' Fisher electric hydraulic reconditioned plow. 33" BFG AT's HD leafs in the rear.

My friends dad has the 1999 5.3L 2500 8 ft box. Not plenty of power at all considering the engine is bolted to a honking 4L80-e and a heavy 14 bolt diff with 3.73's!!?! Also those truck engines came with only 265 hp if im not mistaken.

I don't know what the other specs are for his truck, but I have towed my boat with it and it has plenty of power. Maybe if you're doing some REALLY heavy towing it may struggle.

My boat is 4000 lbs.

Re: 4l60e reliability
The transmissions have gotten better over the years. When you add taller tires, remember to over compensate with the rear end gear ratio. The tires are not only taller, but much heavier and require much more torque to get them to move. Adding an external cooler never hurts. If you are looking for the best in transmission fluid, (and I have recommended this for years), Lubrication Engineers Monolec 7500 at www.le-inc.com/ This is not a synthetic oil. There are a couple other good builders that use this in their transmission, they would rather not tell anyone, and keep the knowledge of this to themselves. Dana

Re: 4l60e reliability
Original 4L60E still going strong here at 265,000 miles. Somewhere between 30k and 40k of that towing between 4000 and 6000 lbs, 50-60 dragstrip passes half of them with the 50-shot.
Transgo kit installed at 90k, Vig TC, '093' servo, and Dana's (PBA) recommended valvebody/separator plate mods at 130k.
Fluid drain/filter change every 50k.

the trans IS sissy. i take it you've never had one apart and seen the interior workings of it. there are some TINY parts in there, especially those used in OD. the biggest problem with them is factory gearing. most of the time it sucks with stock tires, then when you add bigger tires and dont regear, the problem multiplies.
