Is there a need for upgrades for a 4L80E?
I have a 2006 GMC Sierra 2500HD ECLB 4X4 6.0L 4.10 SLT. I am wondering if there is any upgrades to the tramission I should do that will be better for the longevity of the tranny? I am planning on getting a custom tune from Justin at Blackbear performance. Any advice would be appreciated.

might help getting a shift kit but you must have a auxillary trans cooler if one isnt installed already. heat kills automatics.

I'm pretty sure there's a tranny cooler installed already on his truck, as most 2500hd trucks that are equipped with some form of trailering package will have it from the start. My 2500 avalanche does.

Yeah--there's a cooler already on there. Luckily the 2500hd's come with a gauge so you can watch your tranny temps. Justin set mine to shift firm as hell and removed all TM and the needle still never gets above halfway (170 degrees I think-if that sounds right-whatever halfway is). It stays near the bottom (150 I think) 75% of the time.

They say heat kills tranny's, so I think you'll be just fine if it runs like mine does.

Sorry to thread jack, but I'm thinking about the same issue. The only difference, my 4L80E has 142,000 miles on it. I was thinking a Blackbear or W4M tune, but don't want to kill my transmission. Would a shift kit be recommended here as well? Again...sorry to thread jack.

Just ask Justin-sure he wants your business, but he's always been straight with me and it seems everyone else on here.

I will stand by the idea that as long as it stays running cool then you're fine.

Yes, the TransGo Performance Shift kit will give you what you want here. You can tailor the Shift kit to suit your application. With this Shift kit you will not need to use the computer to firm the shifts up. I carry these kits, let me know if I can be of help? Dana

How much are they kits for the 4L80E Dana? Is it installable by average joe or should a mechanic install the kit?

The kits go for $97.25, and yes, you can do all of this from the bottom. With average mechanical skills, you should be able to do this.

I did a shift kit on my 4l60e. Wasnt hard at all. Only issue was how messy it was because the pan didnt have a drain plug. Just be sure to put a new gasket and filter in at the same time.
