Rear Suspension

What kind of rear suspension upgrades would you recomend of an obs 1500? Would just a sway bar do or are their some better things out there?

Re: Rear Suspension

If you're going for handling, swap leafs for a stiffer spring with a quality shock matched for that spring rate. Sway bars are always a good mod for handling.

What about your front set-up?

Look into Caltrack traction bars if you have wheel hop.

Re: Rear Suspension

I thought the Cal-tracs were for under-axle spring applications only....

@randeez... what leaf-pack would you suggest swapping into a 4dr 2wd Tahoe? Mine has quite a bit of sag, and I haven't seen any direct swap info. The factory leaf-pack is a 27"/27" measurement.

Re: Rear Suspension

I noticed a decent improvement after installing a simple spring helper for 32$ Maybe a rear sway bar with poly bushings next (after the front end gets tightened up a little.
I've also read that a simple 2" drop w shackles in the back helps...
Oh yes, DON'T forget the Bilstein HD shocks!!!

They make a different set for flipped rears

Where did you get the composite rear springs?

Re: Rear Suspension

Swaybar (matched to the front bar - bigger isn't always better) Flip kit, poly bushings and leave the stock springs. They are plenty form enough w/ an empty bed. You stiffen the rear up any more (with different springs) and it will be @ss happy.

Re: Rear Suspension

CKTA can you explain why bigger isn't alway better. What does the thickness directly effect? I asked that question in another thread and nobody responded.

Re: Rear Suspension

Too big of sway bars can actually hurt handling. As can mismatched swaybars. When looking for swaybars (assuming you are looking for a rear one) always by them in a matched set. Mismatched bars actually cause under and oversteer.

Re: Rear Suspension

At what point can it hurt the handling?

Re: Rear Suspension

All depends on the set-up and other parts. If you are asking because you are looking for a rear bar (and still have a stock front one) get a stock rear bar and you will be fine.

I have been looking around for a front and rear. Just trying to figure out what would be best.

I have to disagree about swapping leafs and being asss happy.
I swapped everything w/ Hotchkis' TVS (coils, leafs, sway bars, matched valved shocks and LTL trac bars not a part of the TVS) it improved handling 100% w/zero "asss happyness". It handled more like a car.
This was not in a Chevy but it was in a SCSB. As long as the rates are matched front to back with the same for the shocks, swapping leafs is going to drastically help in the handling department.

V6rado,
Summit has a good selection of bars, 1" and 1-1/8" bars.

www.flex-a-form.com They stock what they call a 4" drop for our trucks. I ended up using drop hangars and shackles with the springs to get the ride ht right.

BTW, the stock leaf spring pack weighed 75 lbs per side. The above springs are 8 lbs per side.

Just fine. I've had em on for 5 years or so. They're on my 90, so its not daily driven.

Thanks, and at 8lbs that is probably lighter than a 4-link/coilover setup!
