Fix Those Wipers (Wiper Board Repair)
For those of us that that the recall dosent cover here is a cheap fix. I got sick of having my wipers quit on me when I needed them most. This fix will get you going again for almost free.
What you need
Torx T20 bit and related driver tool
Soldering iron and rosin core solder
15 mins of your time
Locate the wiper motor (adjacent to the brake booster)
Remove the 3 T20 screws, and then the cover

Remove the grey locking pin on the wiring harness, then remove the connector.
CAREFULLY wiggle the board out of the housing.
Look at the backside of the board for "cold" solder joints. You may even see a complete break. resolder the bad joints and any in question. Mine was on the connector as indicated by the arrow
Reinstall everything in reverse order.
Try them out....if they work fine now, pat yourself on the back and give yourself a star!

Re: Fix Those Wipers (Wiper Board Repair)
Yes, I agree, nice write-up.
I, also, got tried of the wiper stoppin, after doing the solder job, once.
Then, I herd Autozone carried a repl. curcuit board(pt# 99136), in the help section for like $28. bucks.
Thanks,
Don

Cool article. Will this also solve the problem where the wipers (when they are working correctly) wont stop a little above where they are suppose to? thanks

My 88 had a different wiper assembly. After looking around for a while, here and other places, the card for 95 and earlier was phased out of supply. To fix pre-95 you have to buy a new motor and card from a 96+. The motors mount up the same, the wire harness is the same, just different module on the motor.

Re: Fix Those Wipers (Wiper Board Repair)
does the grey locking pin get pulled out the front? Also, You can't just wiggle the board out. There are "pins" that keep the board in place. I tried to pry the board out w/ something plastic but the pins kept holding it in. Anyone know how to remove the wiper board? thanks

which would explain why my '93 looked totally different when I finally got it off. How expensive is this new motor assembly?

Mine is a 95 and it was under that recall. Did it have something to do with the month it was made?

Re: Fix Those Wipers (Wiper Board Repair)
My 92 GMC was not covered by the recall, I payed ~$45 at a GM dealership to get a replacement board. This was I think two summers ago.
I don't recall replacing the motor too, so maybe this dealership still had some of the pre-95 cards in stock? Don't know how that fits in to the story.
Anyways, good article and definitely good advice for anyone with an OBS who hasn't fixed it yet. I bought mine from the dealership in the middle of a rain storm, just couldn't put up with dead wipers any longer.
When you put the cover back on you may want to put some kind of gasket sealer or caulk around the edge just as extra insurance to keep the board from getting wet.

Another thing is the grease build up on the two contacts that meet the large gear on the back side.

Re: Fix Those Wipers (Wiper Board Repair)
on my 92 the solder joint for the contacts on the PC board were cracked. I resoldered them and has not acted up since. Sympton was the wipers would come on then go off and would act eracticaly (real tough to drive in the rain).

Re: Fix Those Wipers (Wiper Board Repair)
Just fixed my wipers with this. Also fixed my waher fluid pump not working by repairing the solder joints. If anyone in the Dallas area isn't willing to pay a dealer to fix this I can take a look at it and try it. Just PM me.

I had the same problem. I have a '93. I took some pics of my board. I really need this fixed as a safety issue because I can't be caught out in the rain. Basically, my question is: Can I buy a replacement board from autozone or whatever and put it in? Will it work? thanks
