Parking Brake

I just fixed my parking brake, and thought i should do a write up on how to fix them.

You will need:

13mm wrench

If the first method does not work, then you will also need:

Jack
Jack Stands
Torque Wrench
Socket Set
Extensions
16mm open end wrench

If there are any broken parts inside of the drum, they cannot be replaced individually, so you will need to buy the GM parking brake rebuild kit, which is
PN:8898-2878
-----------------------------------------------------------
FIRST METHOD:

take the 13mm wrench and tighten up the adjuster screw on the balancer
The balancer is located underneath the driver's side rear door on X-cabs.

-----------------------------------------------------------
SECOND METHOD:

1. Jack up the rear end of the truck. Chock the front tires if you'd like
2. Remove the rear wheels / tires
(from the factory GM puts retaining clips on 2 of the lug bolts to hold on the rotors during building. you will now need to cut these off. If you put on aftermarket rims, these need to be cut off or they just wont work right.)

3. Unbolt the rear calipers from the caliper mounting bracket using a 12mm socket. You may need to hold the nut w/ a 16mm open end wrench.
4. Remove the pads.
5. Then unbolt the caliper mounting bracket with an 18mm socket.
6. remove the rotor.
7. check the thickness of the shoe lining and check to see if the lower clip is still intact.
<-- Shoe lining
<-- Shoe retaining clip (bottom on driver's side, top on passenger)

If the shoe linings and clips are fine on both sides, skip to step 15

8. Unbolt bolt holding shoe retaining clip
9. slide the shoe out of the tappet and adjusting nut assembly.
10. roll the shoe off of the hub
11. replace the tappet, adjusting nut assembly, pin, handbrake lever, dustcover, and adjustment pawl and lube as needed.
12. Put the new shoe on the reverse of removing hte old one.
13. Slip hte shoe over the tappet and adjusting nut assembly.
14. bolt the new hold down spring on inside of the shoe (does not take much force, rated at 18-44 INCH POUNDS)
(you can see the great difference between the old and new hold down springs. perhaps GM realized something around 2002?)
15. Turn the adjusting nut clockwise to expand the shoe. Do so until it rubs on the rotor when installed, then turn it counter-clockwise enough to keep it from doing so.
( I urge you to be careful to not expand the shoe too much at a time, or the rotor might get stuck onto the shoe, in which case you will need to shimmy the rotor and have a buddy shake the other wheel to remove it. You will probably bend the hold down spring)
16. reinstall the rotor
17. reinstall the caliper bracket and torque bolts to 148 for 1500's or 122 for 2500's.
18. reinstall the brake pads
19. reinstall the caliper and torque to 31 for 1500's or 80 for 2500's
20. reinstall wheels and tires
21. lower enough for tires to touch, and torque to 140 lbs/ft.
22. take the 13mm wrench and tighten up the adjuster screw on the balancer
The balancer is located underneath the driver's side rear door on X-cabs.

Re: Parking Brake

thanks blown. been waiting for a write-up for the emergency/parking brake for months. mine was already shot when i bought it a few months ago. been debating upgrading to cross-drilled and slotted rotors at the same time. but you aren't supposed to resurface them so i may just stick with stock rotors. mine are warped. once again, thanks BS.

Re: Parking Brake

Be advised - I bought two of the 8898-2878 kits thinking I needed one for each side. You only need one. If anyone is interested in buying my extra kit, PM me.

Re: Parking Brake

How the hell did you get ebrake shoe out from around the hub? I couldnt figure it out to save my life. So I re-used the old pads since they werent bad. Now the pad fell off and its clanking. Im gonna have to pull it apart next weekend.

On the retaining clips. On the drivers side, I only have 1. Id assume there should be 2? One above and one below the shoes?

Re: Parking Brake

Anyone know how the clips hold the shoe in place?

Re: Parking Brake

Great writeup. Was a great guide for redoing my brakes. Anyone doing this may inspect their brakes first. I got my truck @ 30K miles. The parking brake never "worked". I never really used it because of. My pass side looked as it had never worked from day 1 and the drivers side was worn slightly on the bottom only. Everything else was in good condition. I probably could have fixed it without a reline kit. It looks like whoever initially set them up, just stuck the shoe on there, without adjustment and called it good. Probably was just tight enough to barely hold when new. I got them nice and tight (but, not too tight ;) ).

Did you have to take the adjustment pawl off in order to turn the adjustment nut? I did. I didn't put it back yet, not sure if it can be put back without taking it out of adjustment. The only thing it seems to do it keep the nut from free spinning. The ridge of the pawl rode in a groove on the nut. Later I'll look again and see if it can be put back without diassembly. If not, no worries. The nut has a lot of resistance. It doesn't take long at all to do this.

Thanks!

Re: Parking Brake

i was going to do this like 2 years ago but said "eff it". now i'm thinking of doing this again. but i'm also thinking of going with aftermarket x-drilled rotors. does ANYONE know FOR CERTAIN if aftermarket rotors will work with this shotty chevy parking brake application? wouldn't these rotors have to be application-specific for use with the 99-02 gm parking brakes? thanks all...

Re: Parking Brake

I did this when I installed my Power Slot rotors and have a dragging problem. I have replaced all the cables and the pedal assembly trying to get them to stop dragging.
They heat up and get hot enough to smell dragging the truck to a stop at lights.
I've double and tripple checked all the dimensions and everything is working as it should.
My theory now is that the "clip" at the bottom of the shoe assembly isn't enough to keep it from sliding down and dragging at the bottom causing heat build-up and expansion.
Letting things cool and dis-assembling, everything rotates without drag.
Anybody have this?

Re: Parking Brake

That's it! I've had it with this POS parking brake!
No matter how many parts I replace (everything) the damn things still drag and heat up.
I'm going out now and yanking the whole mess.
