Re: disc brake swap
<<The parts list that came with my KORE3 kit lists the calipers and rotors for this conversion.
GM #'s are 18028256 for straight vane rotor x2.
18039377 LH rotor
18039378 RH rotor>>
These part numbers are for the 5 lug rotor? Did Kore mention a suitable 6 lug rotor? I already have the Caddy calipers as I have done this swap on both of my Chevelles, and they used a 79-81 (5 x 4.75") TransAm rotor. If anyone else knows of a 6 lug rotor that will work, please post the info. Thanks.

Re: disc brake swap
Well I emailed Kore about the 6 lug rotor, got their reply so I figured I would post for the benefit of others. I had asked about the part numbers for the 6 lug rotor for rear disc brakes on my 99 Silverado 4x4. This is what they use for their 88-00 kit:
We use the 88-91 front K1500 rotor (standard-duty) for this application. The OE rotor is a composite rotor design where the hat portion is stamped steel and the friction surface is cast onto the hat however some of the OE replacement/aftermarket rotors for the application are unicast designs. I have a pair of slotted AC Delco Durastop Performance rotors in stock if you're interested. They are $150 for the pair if you order with brackets and hoses.
(1) GM #18038526 (ACDELCO #18A1013) ROTOR, 11.625 X 1, 6 X 5.5, RH, DURASTOP PERFORMANCE
(1) GM #18038525 (AC DELCO #18A1012) ROTOR, 11.625 X 1, 6 X 5.5, LH, DURASTOP PERFORMANCE
You can use any GM metric small caliper with our brackets, including front or rear calipers, depending on whether you want to maintain rear parking brakes at the wheels or not.
(1) GM #18035814 Front Caliper w/o parking brake, RH (i.e. 1982-1987 Chevy Camaro front caliper)
(1) GM #18035815 Front Caliper w/o parking brake, LH
(1) GM #18035980 Rear Caliper w/ parking brake, RH (i.e. 1980-85 Cadillac Eldorado rear caliper)
(1) GM #18035981 Rear Caliper w/ parking brake, LH
Aside from that, you'll just need flexible brake hoses to go from the calipers to the rear axle hardlines which will require some minor modifications. We sell a braided stainless kit with (2) 12" FlexKORE hoses, (2) M10x1.5 banjo bolts, (4) 10mm crush washers, (2) clips, and (2) universal hose anchor brackets for $57.50. You may want to run an adjustable proportioning valve as well, which we have in stock for $50.
Please let me know if you have any further questions.

I meant to ask him about ABS. I am familiar with 4 wheel ABS using disc brakes, but I currently have drums on the back of the truck. I have ABS on the truck, I'm not sure if it is 4 wheel ABS or not? Some cars/trucks with rear drums sense the rotation of the cooling fins on the rear brake drum for the ABS. I'll have to poke around and find out how the system currently works and if they have a solution using their rear disc kit. HTH

Re: disc brake swap
I am going to place order for all necessary parts for this conversion. Do I need new parking brake cable to finish this conversion or just re-use original parking brake cable to get this job done?

Re: disc brake swap
great info everybody!
still a couple questions still bug me: (for those who have completed the conversion)
1. has it changed the way your wheel mounts (in relation to the fender: pushed the wheel out or brought it in)?
2. have any of you really got on the pedal and experienced any rear lock up?
wondering if the ABS will still function normally..
thanks!

Re: disc brake swap
also to add to the list... would it be best to run a proportioning valve, how does it brake say from a hard stop from 60 to 0 any pull one way or the other? does the ass end want to come around. if lots of us are goin to do this swap it would be nice to make sure were all safe!!

I measured the thickness of the drum and disk mounting surface, and the disk brakes should have made the tires stick out 1/8" more per side, but once I installed it and put the wheels on, the wheels tucked better. I have no idea why. I stomped on the brakes, and the rear hasn't locked up.

Just for clarification, you did not have to machine the inside of the impala rotor to fit flush as is required for as S-10 rotor did you?

I believe he deburred the inside of the rotor and the face of the axle shafts to prevent wobble, but there was no machining involved, except for drilling out the holes for the lugs to 9/16. An S-10 wheel/rotor has a 5 x 4.75, which wouldn't fit anyway...

Re: disc brake swap
You pretty much have to use the impala rotor, the only part you have a choice on is the S-10 or Caddy calipers. Caddy has an E brake, S-10 doesn't.

Re: disc brake swap
Bought 85 Caddy front rear calipers. There is a wire cliper on the piston. See the pictures.
What is that cliper's function??

Re: disc brake swap
that spring is a damper spring. i assume its to keep the pads quiet. the calipers will work without this spring in place.

Re: disc brake swap
Guys, these are floating calipers, they need to be able to move as the pads wear, so they need a flex hose between the axle and the caliper. Also, if the rotors are thinner than the rotors whatever calipers you're using were designed for, you need a spacer (a simple piece of flat steel stock on the back of the inboard pad with a couple tack welds works fine) otherwise you run the risk of the pistons traveling out too far as the pads wear. The caliper with new pads should just barely fit over the rotor with the pistons fully retracted. Good luck with the conversions.

Re: disc brake swap
I saw this thread a while back but haven't kept up with it. Just read it all and it seems there's quite a bit to sift through so i'm going to be lazy.
I'm considering doing this swap on my '86. Could someone provide parts list for that? I'd like to keep e-brake and do not have access to machining equipment, so grinding stuff will not be convenient.
Here's what i was considering before: http://www.classicparts.com/prodinfo.asp?number=71-982B

Re: disc brake swap
I think there is another option for the calliper with e brake. I heard that 93-97 camaro rear callipers will work also. They will use the ss rotors as well.
