This mod was worth every penny! The only complaint I have is the rotor needs to be slightly bigger to get full contact on the s10 pads. I still might look into a proportioning valve. The rear doesnt lock up but id like for the front to do about 60% of the braking, I think right now the front & rear are each doing 50%.

Looks good! Keep us updated on how it works out after some miles on it.

Re: disc brake swap

Thanks for the compliments. Its been about 10 days since ive done the mod & I drive the truck daily. Still works great! Ive been keeping an eye on them & everything seems fine.

I dont even think there is a need for a proportioning valve anymore since it all started to loosen up. For the first day or so the pads would slightly drag the rotors after you let off the brake. I guess since everything has had a chance to wear together, everything is good. The calipers float very smoothly on the slider bolts now without feeling sticky.

Parts list:
Speedway brackets & slider bolts - $40
94-96 Impala SS rear rotors - $67 (pair)
s10 brake pads - $30
used 98 s10 calipers, lines & banjo bolts - free

I didnt need to pull out the axle shafts, I just cut the plate off the axle that held all the old drum pads & springs. The only thing you really need to modify are the brackets need to be beveled a little, like the diagrams in earlier posts. Then you either weld on the bracket or drill 2 holes in each to bolt it on. Also dont forget to drill the holes to 9/16 in the rotors.

What took the longest was grinding the bracket, test fitting, grinding, testing, etc. Then fitting everything together 3 or 4 times until i was satisfied all was good. Very easy!

I think the kore3 brackets are the only ones that use all four.
They are the only ones that I have seen anyways.

Re: disc brake swap

looks like most guys here have 1990+yr trucks with this conversion. will the kore3 brackets work for an '86 c10? 5 lug, 10 bolt. kore3 site lists them for 88-00. anything for older fits that are listed seem to be for cars or s10.

almost forgot...i need brackets that can bolt on without machining or grinding.

NO. The axle flange on the 73-87 is different than what is found on the 88+. You might be able to make them fit but you would have to drill new holes in the Kore Brackets.

thanks.

is there a bracket that will work? i'm planning to start working on my truck this week and the rear brakes pretty much need complete rebuild...wheel cylinders, drums, shoes, springs/hardware..i figure if i'm gonna spend $300 i might as well switch to disc

i just found this site. don't recall seeing it in this thread.

Re: disc brake swap

you could go the speedway bracket route and drill them to fit your axle flange or have them welded on or you could buy just the brackets from a company like streetrod manufacturing company for your truck. or you can go here and make your own brackets like this guy did:

http://www.73-87.com/7387garage/chas...n/reardisc.htm

hope this helps. the main thing to do when doing the rear disc brakes is do your hw first. have all the parts, dont try to cut corners, and do it right the first time.

Re: disc brake swap

I happen to have a set of ImpalaSS backing plates and caliper brackets. I bought them years ago thinking of doing a disc swap on another car.

Do you guys thing I could bolt everything using these instead of the Speedway brackets?

Then of course I would use ImpSS rotors/calipers/pads as well.

thanks for the info. from the looks of that guy's set-up i may just order the kit from classic parts to avoid the fabrication process since it might be too expensive, no tools or 'hook-up'. i'll keep looking. hopefully i'll find something reasonable soon.

Re: disc brake swap

Hey guys, my name is Mike.I just registered on the site, and wanted to introduce myself. Looks like a great site, with tons of invaluable info on our trucks.I can't wait to do this brake swap on mine.I still have to get a little more info on the rear, before I order anything.I'm planning to use the Moser 12 bolt, just need to get ahold of them and make sure everything will be the same. What rear end ratios are you guys running?I think I'm going with a 3.42:1.Anyway thanks for posting this stuff, it's been a big help. Oh, and has anyone figured out what to do about a backing plate yet?

Re: disc brake swap

Thought I'd let you guys know that I found a bracket with 4 holes which is what most of the high end kits that I've seen have used. They're $95 shipped. Here's the link:

Re: disc brake swap

i was talking with a friend yesterday. he said swapping the rear-end out with one from a camaro with discs should work on my 86. Is that true/possible? i didn't see that option mentioned in this thread.

Re: disc brake swap

I just wonder about the comments about the Cadillac rear calipers needing to have the parking brake set every time. Was this required on these cars from the factory? If so then I don't think it would have been very popular to consumers in my opinion!

just an fyi for the pre-88 owners out there...

kingtek response to request for 86 bracket:

"A bracket kit is in the works, but it will
most likely be 2-3 months before I have anything for
sale."

edit:
sorry to keep dragging this on but i'm not really in the mood to wait for the pre-88 brackets. what if i hit up the salvage yard for a 88 rear and swap it out on my 86? possible? things to consider?

Your friend is VERY wrong......

1. the rear is completely different, mounts, spring perches and width.

2. The bolt pattern is 5 on 4.75, not 5 on 5 like your truck has.

You need a rubber or stainless flex hose and either get a new brake line or cut the old one and use a double flaring tool to flare the ends.
