Re: disc brake swap
Ok after lots of reading I did not see it. Maybe I overlooked it. Anyways I'm looking to convert my drums on my 05 Sierra to disc. My 02 had disc now I upgrade to an 05 and I'm back to drums. What gives? Anyways can someone please point me in the right direction to upgrade. Not looking for SSBC or anything like that. Just looking at using stock parts. Thanks for your time.

Re: disc brake swap
But do the drums actually PERFORM worse or better than the discs? What are actual 60-0 and 70-0 stopping distances?
Drums have less drag = better mpg
Drums are easier to put larger in (look at my 99 K2500 Burb with 13x3.5" drums you would need MASSIVE discs to compete with those)
Discs look cooler
Discs can if designed well can dissappate heat better
Discs often have e-brake issues.
Drums have bulletproof e-brakes
Discs look cool..... did I mention that?
GM switched back from discs to drums for a good reason. Not something trivial I am sure.
Ok, to answer your question, there are a couple ways.
Go to a boneyard and toss in a 02 axle. Call it done.
Go to the dealer, order 02 backing plates. Go to parts store, get calipers and rotors and e-brake cables. Remove axle shafts and swap. Should be fairly straightforward.

Re: disc brake swap
I have 1990 454SS with the 14 bolt. Will the caddy setup work on my truck? Great thread by the way.

Re: disc brake swap
So Im about to start the conversion on my
K1500 1997 Chevy
Ive looked up the Kor3 Part For the Bracket and Decided on Cadi Calipers not sure which caliper is cheaper they all look kinda expensive. $67 1985 rear cadi caliper. Anybody know of any better caliper to choose from?
And how hard is it to attach the Ebrake cable since im sure they don't match. Any good way to to do that.
lol changed my mind cadi calipers are way to expensive s-10 is way more cost effective cause that 67 wasnt includeing a 30 dollar core charge D@mn thats crazy.

Re: disc brake swap

Re: disc brake swap
The rotors are smaller (10in I think) and the center hole is smaller. So probably, but might not be worth the work, if cheap, go for it and see what you can do.
Those used the same calipers as the 79-81 Firebird/TA's.
I know the truck 10 bolt axle bearings are larger than the car 10 bolt axle bearings. So enlarging the hole is needed.

Re: disc brake swap
Anyone did this on a 14bolt SF 8-lug? Which rotors? Same brackets and calipers?
I followed the link on an earlier page to a company that has everything, but it looks like they nickel and dime you to death.

You bastard !:) , I read on their site they win't be back till sept 1st , and orders won't be shipped until then !!!
Post some pics of your install , I've got the calipers for $10 for the pair and rotors for $55 shipped to my front door , $85 brackets are all I need other than ebrake spacers I believe I'm going to step up to a 2500/3500 series MC as I've already upgraded the front calipers/rotors , and with the discs in the back I'd like a little less pedal effort than I have now

yeah well I didnt get to far in my install today..I finished my edelbrock MPFI install today and got that going...took longer today..too damn hot out.. I will be doing my disc and mini spool tommorrow..I planned on the pics.... Oh and for the 85 bucks you could honestly make your own brackets if you had a template*..there not very complex.

Re: disc brake swap
Go to GM and see what the factory ones look like from the 00-up 2500/3500's with discs. OR the 00 and older OBS with the discs (some C3500's had them). But those OBS C3500's MAY not be on a 8 lug 14 bolt 10.5". But might be made to work.

Re: disc brake swap
they make a retaining pin breaker for just such a problem , reaches around the carrier & piushes the dif pin thru the retaining pin ala' shear style ! or you can use a cutoff wheel to make a nice slot in the end of the pin so you can slip it out.
Hope any of this helps.

Re: disc brake swap
Did the pin break or the lock bolt that holds the pin in place.
My lock bolt broke and I was able to get a long 12in or so drill bit and drill a hole into the end of it and then use a screw extrator or the bit in reverse (don't recall which I did) and it came right out easily. Was not NEAR the headache I was expecting it to be.
Key, go to local hardware store and get long 1/16" or so bit and drill a hole into the end of the bolt that broke off. This will get you a way to get the bolt out, and remember, once the head is off, the bolt won't have tension on, and it will come easy.
Hope it does!!!
I think this is what I used as my guide: http://www.etoolcart.com/differentia...ractorkit.aspx

Re: disc brake swap, What kind Rear Rubber Hose
What is the best choice of the rear brake rubber hose for this conversion? I mean that the hose is not too long, 10 inches or shorter, direct bolting on for fittings with 45-degree double flare without any modification.
I tried 1996 Chevy Caprice one, the length is right, but the fitting has problem. My 1999 Tahoe brake hard line is 45-degree double flare (SAE 45deg flare or bubble flare); 1996 Chevy Caprice is bubbler flare. Both do not match.
Of course, I can use 1999 Tahoe front brake hose which has right fitting for double flare, but the hose is too long.
Some ones in this group used 1976 Chevtte front brake hose, but the hose needs some modification.
Any idea?

Re: disc brake swap, Bracket Size Wrong, Pictures
I bought disc brake conversion bracket form kore3.com.
Here is the problem that the distance between holes on the disc brake conversion bracket does not match the distance between holes on the truck rear axle hub. See the pictures.
The distance between holes on the truck rear axle hub is around 3-1/4 inches; the distance between holes on the bracket is less than 3 inches.
My truck is 1999 OSB Tahoe 4Dr, 4WD, 5 lug nut 15-inch wheel. The rear brake is 11-in drum. The truck is retired police hi-way patrol vehicle, GM Pro-Code Z56 (police package).
Question: Does 1999 Tahoe have different axle hub size assuming the bracket size being right?

Re: disc brake swap, Broken Lock Bolt
So, after the broken lock bolt is extracted, when can the replacement bolt be purchased except GM dealer?
