99-02 NBS power window regulator and motor replacement

A common issue with the NBS that is starting to pop up is the drivers side power window regulator cables are breaking. the issue is with the spool that the cable winds up on it wears and puts the cable in a sharp bend and as the cable tightens around the spool it weakens and eventually breaks,
The symptoms are the window starts to hang up going both up and down what is happening is the cable is fraying and binding up in the housing. once this starts there is no "fixing" it trust me I tried trimming the broken wires out of the cable and it still broke the rest of the wires and the result was a window in the down position.

This is done on my wifes 01 suburban so I'm assuming all the NBS are alike.
here's what you will need:
1 replacement power window regulator with motor autozone part number 741-644 (drivers side front)this is the correct part number that's on the box(the website part number is different if you look up the part on the web this number is for a non power or something like that) ( you can also get just the cable or just the regulator kit I went with the whole assembly cause if you buy the regulator by itself its like $89.00 but with the motor it's $99.00 motor by itself 59.00 and if you let it go for too long the cable messes up the housing so the replacement cable is useless too.so I bought the whole kit that way I have a spare motor.
tools:
1 7mm socket
1 10mm socket
phillips and flathead screwdriver
and the most important part a coulple of wood shims or tape this is to hold the window all the way up so it's out of the way.
that's pretty much it it's a pretty simple operation and it'll only take @45 minutes or so to do.

let's get on with it:
first thing you will need to pull the lil plastic trim triangle off the hinge end of the door and then there is a lil 7mm bolt under the map pocket on the very bottom of the door panel.

now carefully remove the power window/door lock/mirror switch assembly you do this by very gently pulling up on the housing there are a couple of retainers on the outer edge now once the outer edge pops up tilt it back away from you and towards the door panel and lift it up and out.
then dissconnect (un plug)all the switches and set the panel aside, now look into the door panel if you have heated seats there will be 2 more things to unplug one is the door speaker the other is the heated seat/seat memory harness.

once you have that out of the way there are 2 more 7mm screws to remove one under the door pull and one where the window switches are

now the door panel is ready to come off DO NOT PULL/PRY THE DOOR PANEL OFF like the older trucks and cars the newer ones lift up and come off. one more wire to deal with it's the light on the door panel undo it and set the door panel aside.

now that you have the door panel off you will see that the door is covered in plastic this is a dust shield you will have to move it out of your way or cut it around the door handle and remove it entirely but save it you will need to put it back on later.

got the panel off yet?? ok your door should look something like this:

now if your window is stuck down you need to lift it manually to get the window up as far as you can, once this is done take the wedges and put them between the window and the felt wiper in the door or using tape go over the top of the door to both sides of the window be sure to put one on the hinge end of the door and one on the latch side cause the window will want to tilt and fall.put them at the top of the window not the sides and be careful of what kind of tape you use I would put a paper towell or something under the tape to protect the paint.
if your window still works plug your switch back in and run it up to the top.mine was totally broke so I could move it up or down manually.
while the window is all the way up there are 2 access holes in the door where you can reach the bolts that hold the window to the regulator (the bolts are gold tone) now that you got the window up and held in place it's time to pull the 6 bolts holding the window regulator in place in this pic I put yellow tape on them to mark their location.

remove the 2 gold tone bolts that hold the window to the regulator track then carefully pull apart the rubber lined brackets that hold the window, I say carefully because mine were a little stuck DONT USE A SCREWDRIVER you WILL break the window!!
now remove the 6 bolts in the door and the regulator/motor assembly is ready to come out starting on the left side(non motor) lift the track slightly(it's held on by a lil hook) and tilt the track and remove out of the large acess hole like this:

same goes for the motor side.
save the motor side track there is a lil rubber bumper on it you have to re-use here's a pic of it removed from the factory track.note the orentation of it you need to put it on the new track the same way it came off to install it use an allen wrench or something similar put it in the hole in the rubber and push it thru the hole in the new track.

now your ready to install the new regulator it pretty much goes in reverse order
first put the tracks back in the door thru the big hole in the door I put the left side in first and hooked it on the door then the motor side now bolt them up there isn't really any adjustment to worry bout here I just lined the washers up with the marks left in the door from them.
now this is what I did to get the window back in the holders I ran the motor down to where I could get to the retaining bolts on the tracks I loosened them till they were almost backed all the way out then while holding onto the window I removed the shims holding the window in place and gently let the window slide down to the holders then I ran the motor again to where I could see the holders and lined the window up with the holders you can do this by lining up the clean spots on the lower edge of the window with the holders (the clean splot are where the old holders were attached to the window).
now run the window up or down till you can tighten the retaining bolts (I just used a phillips screwdriver for now)in the track brackets and gently tighten them but not too tight just snug them down. here is one it's in the middle of the pic (remember the lil gold 10mm bolt that's it)

now test run the window a couple of times and you should be good to go. once you are comfortable with the window's location and it's fully seated in the holders, it's not binding or tilted tighten up the retainer bolts hand tight and start re-assembling the door panel
just remember the plastic liner goes on first...
then the little light at the bottom of the door, then the door panel goes on you will have to line up the holders with the holes in the door, now the map pocket and 3-7mm screws the shorter one goes in the bottom of the map pocket.
now the speaker/seat memory/heated seat wires.
and the window/mirror switch harness(plugs)
and finally the little triangle trim piece now your finished.

edit: the little yellow refelective stickers are still on the door....I figured sometime in the future someone would have the panel off and be all like WTF????

Re: 99-02 NBS power window regulator and motor replacement

This was great. My window got stuck in the down when it was about 20 degrees outside and I was minutes away from taking it to the shop and being charged who knows how much until my Dad found this thread. Got the part online for $65, parked it in my Dad's garage til it arrived and in less than an hour today, had a completely functioning window again. Thanks!!!

your welcome, I also found out that murphy's law does apply to broken/ malfunctioning windows and motors.

Re: 99-02 NBS power window regulator and motor replacement

Nice pictorial. I bought a new one off ebay for under $40 delivered. It's slower than the original on the other door. The original raises the window in 4 seconds and the one I put on raises it in 6 seconds. Not a big deal.

Re: 99-02 NBS power window regulator and motor replacement

Argh....My $40 regulator took a crap after only 2 weeks. I read on this board that you should use a genuine GM window regulator because the aftermarkets don't last. I was hoping to get at least 2 years out of it (not 2 weeks)
It has a 30 day money back gaurentee so I'll get my money back.

Re: 99-02 NBS power window regulator and motor replacement

A big thanks for this how to.

I just did this repair today to my wife's 2001 Tahoe. The driver side regulator/motor was not working.

I chose to use GM parts for the repair. The retail for the regulator and motor is $202.00. I found a local dealer that would sell it for about 25% less than retail The part number for the regulator/motor for the driver side front door is 25885878. It is a GM and or AC Delco replacement part. Also needed are two nuts, GM part number 11561645. The reason for the nuts is because GM redesigned the regulator so that the two bottom bolts are replaced with the nuts. Also on this part there is no need to replace the little rubber bumper, as the new part has a bumper already in place.

The most difficult part of this repair for me was separating the electrical connectors. Seems GM has a different connector design for each connector.
