Re: Waterpump replacement for '96-'99 Vortec motors.
Sweet Victory. Did it last night. Got the Autozone new unit for 50 bucks. Had to rent the tool for the big nut removal. Very nice. Took my time cleaned it good. New fluid, ready for winter.
By the way this site is great, just reading the old posts really helped Thanks for the help.

Re: Waterpump replacement for '96-'99 Vortec motors.
Did my 97 Silverado tonight. The job was a piece of cake - the hardest part was getting fan off. I used a 10 MM closed-end wrench and wedged it against the tensioner and a large pliers to loosen the nut. WD-40 helped as well.

Hopefully I got her sealed up well without leaks. Took about 1 1/2 hours to do it right, and I didn't have any extra bolts at the end which is good for me.

Re: Waterpump replacement for '96-'99 Vortec motors.
i had to remove my fan the other day, thought the timing chain went, luckily no, it was the distributor cap, anyway it was the first time i ever had to wedge a bar into the 10mm bolts in order to tap the big nut loose, i was shocked, normally i get the big adjustable, and tap it with a hammer and its loose, but not this time.

on 96 and up this fittings is on the intake, on the pass side of the engine. you can't miss it. the line you quoted from me was about the 95 tbi engine, where it is on top of the water pump, the fitting is the same but in diff spot. these fittings are made of aluminum, or some type of really soft metal.

here is the best pic of i have of where it is on the 96-99 vortecs.

Re: Waterpump replacement for '96-'99 Vortec motors.
I rented the pulley holder and nut wrench from Auto Zone today. It didn't work for me. The nut wrench was slightly big and the pulley holder wouldn't fit over the pulley bolts securely enough to keep it from spinning, even with the belt still on. Took it back and I think I'm going to squirt it down with WD-40 tonight since its getting dark, and then whack at it with my big hammer and adjustable wrench tomorrow. Hope 50 whacks does the trick.

Re: Waterpump replacement for '96-'99 Vortec motors.
Guys , I just got done changing my water pump on my 98 4x4 5.7
I decided to try the 15" Cresent wrench on the big nut with a few taps with a big ball peen before I started making a tool to hold the fan pulley.
It took 8 or 10 taps and not hard ones either and she broke loose.
Boy am I glad I tried that first. As usual I refer to this site before I attempt any repair on my truck. Every post has value here , thanks very much guys. You saved my butt again.
