Re: Rear End Ratio RPO Codes Here
Ok, I'm confused, the rpo code lists here says the g80 is a posi/limited slip but another site says g80 is a locker and g86 is the posi/limited slip. Is it possible that its different for different years? Sounds like the G80 isn't very good either way so maybe I should keep the lock right from my old truck and put it in this one.

Re: Rear End Ratio RPO Codes Here
How can I find out what kind of rear axle I have? I have a 2001 silverado 1/2 ton 2wd and disk brakes. It has ten bolts on the differential and seems to measure 10.5 inches O.D. Everything I have researched about the half tons appear to have 8.5 rear ends. So im confused about what it may be. I also know its has 3.42 gear ratio and no limited slip or locker. Please help, im looking to get 32" or 33" inch tires and 3.73 gears or 3.90. If anyone has any knowledge of this combination please help me make the right decisions. My V8 truck is slow as **** off the start so I need lower gears. However I dont want to be to low in gear that I am running 3000 rpms at 70mph. Please help!

Re: Rear End Ratio RPO Codes Here
Okay, as my luck would have it i looked in my glove box to find out my gear ratio and sure enough it was worn down. I was just wondering if there is another way to find the list of these codes. Thanks in advance.

Re: Rear End Ratio RPO Codes Here
I am new to the forum so excuse if i do something stupid.
I have a 2005 Silverado 1500 auto with the 5.3 motor. It presently has the 3.23 gears and i am wanting to goto 3.90.
I am not sure if its a 10 bolt, 8.5, whatever, can anyone assist me? Considering the Richmond 3.90 with installation kit for about $300. Have someone who will install for $200. This sound like a good deal?

yes these work for old stuff too.
rpo codes date back to 1958. some rpo(rolling production order) codes become cars, like the Z28. L codes are engines, j codes are brakes.
g80 dates back to the 1970 camaro and continues to present day.

Actually, G80 is an Eaton locker. It is a centrifugal force type. You can see it on Eaton's website. There is a different code for plain limited slip. My HD has the G80 with 4.10 gears.

Make sur you order gears for a 90-99 8.5" ringgear 10 bolt reaend. The older gears will fit your 8.6" rearend. If you order the newer gears, they are almost impossible to install, CORRECTLY. They use MUCH closer tolerances in the 8.6 rear, it is much easier to use the older gears. I suggest Richmond gears, much better than GM gears, lots stronger. I had a set of 4.10's that survived over 200 1/4 mile passes and 3 exploding carriers and the digested multiple meals of spider gears.

Are you hunting for gears as you drive....like back and forth between gears and are you sure you are in OD. If you don't have the torque to push those big tires and have a tranny that is computer driven then you may be running in third. I'm sure you checked that but thought I'd mention it just in case.
Here's a site for identifying rears and other stuff to help you: http://www.drivetrain.com/dana44.html#SPECIFICATIONS
How far back to those codes go BTW?

Code on 01 Z71?
just bought my 01 half ton, found the code in the box, and i have the GT5 with the G80. Wierd. i'm wondering if anyone has ever had a misprint on the sticker. Also anybody else out there with a Z71, how fast are you going in OD @ 2000rpm? that would solve the problem if i knew that. I go about 64-65 mph. I have never heard of a 4.10 stock in a half ton and would bet money that mine actually doesn't have one. I'll probly do the tire rotation test.
