convert electric transfer to manual

well it turns out i do not like the electric auto 4x4 system...i just dont feel confident with it.... so i was wondering is there an easy way to convert the push button auto,2h,4h,4l to just a manual transfer set up with a lever on the floor... without putting in a new transfer case.... example maybe just a simple lever setup that replaces the motor or i dont know...cause the auto 4x4 has got my all messed up and confused

Re: convert electric transfer to manual

You'll have to change transfer cases at a minimum, as the NP246C (your autotrac) is a completely electric case, no lever hookup anywhere. The easiest one to install in its place would be a drivers side drop NP241C, as it should be a direct bolt-in. You'll have to cut a hole in the floor for the shifter and get a shifter/linkage setup. The wiring for the two are different as well, but I'm not exactly sure what. A look at a shop manual with the wiring diagrams would make that clear though.

Re: convert electric transfer to manual

If that swap is easy as it sounds nice solution.Especially as the 241c has proven very reliable. So prices are cheap.

Re: convert electric transfer to manual

Converting the Electric Transfer Case Shift Motor to Manual
A while back I mentioned that I had an idea for converting the electric shift motor for the Explorer Transfer Case into a manual drive unit.

Here is a write up with some pictures of my first attempt. Perhaps this can spark some curiosity and engineering efforts amongst the Explorerforum crowd.

Total cost of the parts for this particular build up were limited to the cost of the epoxy kit (about $4.95) and the crank (about $3.00) the rest of the parts were things I had on hand.

So here goes:

The first picture is the parts as I disasembled them and prepared them for the conversion. You can see that I clipped the wires, pushed the drive shaft out of the armature and cut the end of the armature off of the main part to be used later as a bushing. Also pictured is the large washer I used to hold the bearing later - and the piece of emergency brake cable that I used as a driveshaft. The shaft will drive right out of the armature with some "gentle" persuasion with a Ford wrench (hammer) and a punch.

Re: convert electric transfer to manual

It can be done as long as you are good with bracketry, levers and most of all you should be OPEN MINDED. I have manually shifted my 246 transfer case but it wasnt permanent.
