Re: 96-99 454 Vortec owners?
Stock cam? No reason to.... Stock PCM is set to 4500 rpm redline, so it won't anyway. I have revved mine up to 5500 a few times, it is just not worth it, 4500-4800 rpm is about all that it is worth spinning the stock L29 cam too....

Maybe toss in some springs, straighten out the intake tract, and a good exhaust and it will do better. Note the 496/8100 has a SMALLER cam on a LARGER engine than the 454/7400 and it will spin to 5000 rpm and be worth while.

Stock springs are lousy, replace them on sight. It is asking for it to try to rev them high, it will valve float and cause other issues with possibly chipping the cam or damaging the lifter or both.

So check the springs, maybe they are just shot.

Re: 96-99 454 Vortec owners?
thanks for the info. my pcm hits the revlimiter at about 5400 and when im pulling im looking for more wheel speed down the track and i am afraid to shift my trans due to being stock still and dont wanna blow out my 1-2 shift. atleast the season is over till next year. hopfully have done a cam and a few other things by that time.

started making a funny whinning noise at lower rpms yesterday morning to... but it only does it when its cold.

Re: 96-99 454 Vortec owners?
Hey NODIH, I got the new air filter installed yesterday, and drove the truck back and forth to work. Had the logger going, but saved it in some screwy format that's useless. Anyway the STFT's where running a little above and below 0%, LTFT's where running roughly -10%. Still looking a bit rich, but that helped. I didn't get any codes for rich condition, just a pending for the idle high condition. Have to wait for the next $$day for that.

Is anyone near Baltimore going to the get together on the 25th? I'm planning on bringing the family and meeting a few guys there. Justin from Blackbear is planning on being there too.
