His dealer told him it's carbon buildup on the pistons. It started making the noise at 12K miles.

Like I said, I've heard it on NEW engines. There's no "Carbon Build-up" at 13 miles on the clock. It's a design tolerance thing. "hole too big for plug" luckily for me I don't have to blush often ("does this one suffer from piston slap?"), more geeks are concerned with Dex-Cool!

My bosses 03 Tahoe has the cold start knock. Hell it even knocks on startup when it's warm. Only had about 600 miles on the clock last time I drove it too. So NO GM did not fix the problem for '03 and if they say they did then they are flat out lying b/c I have heard it myself.

my 2000 silverado 5.3 w/ 60k on it make a slight ticking for a second or two at start up, i figured that the knock sensor corrects the problem. i think if the problem gets any worse in the near futture im gonna "decarbonize" it. well i know i didnt offer any info that everyone didnt already know but the little that mine knock doesnt seem to hinder the performance of the engine. i personally think it was a fault in the gm production but what do i know. all i do know is that before this truck i had always owned fords and will be going back when i get this one paid off.

You had to post twice (once at 12:38 and again at 12:49) that you are going back to FORDS? I'm not impressed.

I just got off the phone with GM. They gave me a 6 year 100K extended warranty on the engine. No hassles whatsoever. They called the dealer I originally took it to a couple days ago to verify it did have engine knock at start-up. They verified my VIN and address and said the paper work should be here in about 3 weeks. The guy said GM stands behind their products and that is what they are doing to please customers who complain. Here's the number I got from the dealer to call. 1-800-222-1020. Good luck.

Knocking 5.3L V8
My 2002 Burban has 32K miles and knocks when I accelerate, it seems that it has always done this. I just reasoned it was due to 87 octane gas. Looks like I am due for a trip to the dealer. What about using octane booster?

Some of the octane boosters work but it is cheaper to just buy higher octane gas if you are using 87 octane.

Hey guys,
New to the board thanx for the info this is exactly what I've been looking for....the knockin in my truck wasn't noticible to me till just maybe the last 15,000 I've been out of warranty for some time now so I guess I'm going to have to live with all the racket.
In response to what type of oil and gas I'm use I just switched to Synthetic oil 5/30 as if that was going to solve the problem and I use the standard octane gas from either Mobil or Marathon if it makes a difference if anyone here has better results with heavier oil or higher octane gas I'd appreciate the info
thanx

I posted earlier; 02 Burb, 32k. Has knock during accleration for quite some time. did not knock when new (Feb 2002). So from what I am reading,it is #1) CARBON BUILD UP. #2) POOR QUALITY CONTROL/POOR ENGINEERING BY GM. But I thought the knocking was due to unburnt fuel igniting after it leaves the cylinder. That is why it happens during acceleration. Can anyone carify?

new to the thread but wanting to know more details...I have noticed it for the past year now that in the morning when I start I get a little knock but never payed much mine to it because it always went away...but from the little info I gather here it is evedently a serious GM issue...what do I need to do to get in on the loop?

The "knocking" you refer to can be caused by a few different things but NOT by fuel burning after it leaves the cylinder. That type of knocking is caused by the fuel being burned before it should. Providing the ignition timing is correct, the charge is burning before the spark sets it off. Things such as low octane fuel, & carbon deposits in the cylinder still red hot will result in an engine knock or "ping". Then we have the "rod knocking" sound that originates from a bad O-ring in the oil pump. BUT most are complaining from the sound of the engine that is a clattering due to poor piston to cylinder wall clearance.
Pinging - Why are these engines building up carbon more than any other engine?
Knocking (oil pump related) - TSB out on this. If it is loud enough GM will warranty.
Clattering - Poor engineering. GM has attempted to fix some. Some got worse. Lawsuits are gaining momentum on this.
Question: Did they do something to the '03 engines to stop this? I don't see complaints from '03 owners .... or did I just miss something?
