Well I'll start--I have an '03 YXL with close to 15K miles on the clock, bought new in Dec. 2002; just about every morning within a minute or two after startup (and still in idle/park) I hear the knocking noise (definitely isn't a pinging noise as I can distinguish between the two, unfortunately--rather not have to hear either one on any of my vehicles, quite frankly). FWIW I believe I first noticed the knocking around the 12K mark; in any case, there is definitely some knocking (not excessively loud but clearly audible at idle) shortly after startup, and definitely after every cold startup.

Fixed after '02? If my FSC is any indication, GM apparently didn't do a thorough job of doing so.

Oil
I have a 00 silverado 4x4 4.8 vortec with 200000 k I use 5w40 full syn. and use prem. gas every 3 rd. fill also I change the oil every 5000 k and use injecter cleaner every oil change. I have no cold knock or ping this motor runs as strong today as when it was new. The only problem I have had is a exhuast leak at the manifold and when I start it it has a ping till it warms up. This is now been fixed . But I was told the gaskets on 4.8\5.3\6.0 are paper thin and leak making a ping till it warms up. To check put in gear hold brake and give it a little gas if the ping stays the same it might be just a bad gasket.

Thanks, toneman. All I hear people talk about is models up to '02 and my '03 is quiet. It only has 9500 miles so far. I hope it stays that way. I already have one knocking. My '02 Trans Am has been to the shop once. The tech called GM and described what he heard. GM says "it is normal for that model".

In the Transportation section of the Chicago Tribune Newspaper today (Nov 23 2003) it said owners of GM Trucks (SIlverados, Serrias, Yukons and Tohoes) years 1999-2002 with the 4.8, 5.3, and 6 liter engines have complained about the loud knocking noise. GM acknowledge the problem and HAS BOUGHT BACK SOME OF THE VEHICLES!! But GM says it does not affect engine performance and was corrected it latter models. GM also claims this problem surfaced with the switch to new engines. Lemon law lawyers say they have been getting unusally high complaints about this problem. GM officials say carbon and the amount of clearence between the piston and the clyinder wall are the primary causes of the knocking. Current analysis of 150,000 and 300 000 mile engines have exhibited no cold start noise or significant wear. There is some more to the article but that is the important stuff. Just thought I would post this I find this intereisting to see if my truck devolopes this problem and heck maybe some of you guys could get yer truck bought back!! Another thing I found interesting was that the 2 pictuers they showed for this article were a Yukon XL and a Silverado SS standard cab with 6ft bed, thats the first one I have seen like that bought time GM wised up, now they can really compete with the Lightning.

I have 63000 on my 2000 sliverado 5.3 and I don't have this probelm either. One problem I do have is it seems that the driver side vent duct does not have the flow that the passenger side has when the AC is on. I feel like my truck needs an air balance. Does anyone else experience this problem. My passengers will be freezing and I am burning up.

I have an '02 Silverado with 4.8 has 20,000 miles. I don't notice any noise at start up but hear a light ticking noise after it is warm. It sounds more like a lifter tapping than a piston knocking. Anyone know of anything like this? I have been to the dealer, they told me about the CSK, I told them that it's knocking after it's warmed up. They did the top engine cleaner. That didn't really do anything but make my truck stink for a few days. I did get the warranty on the engine so I guess I'll see what happens.

Thanks to several of you, I just called the GM Customer Service Line (call center happens to be right here in Austin!) and a real nice guy told me that they would indeed provide me with the 6yr, 100k warranty at no charge. I am not the original owner of this truck either. In addition, he said that it was not essential that the vehicle be under factory warranty.

All I have to do is to visit the dealer who will confirm that said vehicle has the 'knock', then request a repair order with your name and address. Then you call back the GM rep (gave me his full name and personal extension) and let me know where you went. That's it. He will contact the dealer for confirmation and will then mail you the new warranty.

I gotta say, I haven't been this impressed with customer service in a long time. They're basically giving you the same warranty that comes with the Duramax. And it doesn't just cover a failure that is related to CSK; it covers any engine component failure.

That said, my friend who's a mechanic at a Chevy dealership (he's got an '02 2500HD CC 4x4 w/ 8100 and Allison) says the CSK has not produced one failure related to the knock or pistons. It's just more of a nusiance than anything.

Does anyone know if the O - Ring problem was fixed for the '04s. It sounds like my engine is ticking cold or warm, at idle and acceleration. It was there when i baought it and it is really faint. Went on a drive test with the dealer serviceman and he said it has to do with the exhaust. Its not loud right now, but i would like to get it fixed if it needs to. Maybe i should take them the bulletin

mine only does it on rare occasion...

not nearly consistant enough to reproduce it on command for a dealership...and only when its cold... which would mean leaving my truck there over night for them to try starting in the morning... which aint gonna happen...

Henry is exactly right. Call GM Customer Service (you can find the number on the GM website) and explain to them the problem you had. I had a Chevy Service Advisor try to do the same thing. He said something like "yea, we'll listen to it, but it's normal and within GM operating guidelines." Gave me real attitude. I call Cust Service back and they conference called me to the dealership.

To make matters worse, I had to leave the truck overnight (reasonable, since it needed to be cold) and I wasn't there when they listened to it the next morning. When I picked it up, they said there was nothing wrong with it! So they had a service guy pull it around front for me. I immediately shut-off the engine and grabbed the Service Advisor. I said "listen to this" and when I said that, another customer and her Service Advisor heard me and turned around. I started the truck ('02 2500HD 6.0) and we ALL listened. Nothing happened for about 15 seconds--then it started! It was GREAT! The woman who was there with her Suburban says "Oh, I can hear that!" and the other Service Advisor nodded his head in agreement.

Anyway, he quickly, and sheepishly, changed the ticket to reflect that he heard the CSK. That was about 2 weeks ago. A few days ago, my letter from GM arrived informing me of my 6 year, 100k warranty on ALL engine components!

Persist my man! Don't let the jerks at the dealership take advantage of you.
