Re: Recalls & Engine Knock Info
Wow what a great thread!!

I have an 2001 4x4 8.1. Would the engine slap be causing my engine oil to burn more frequently.. I have to go in to get a top off about two to three times before my next oil change. Any thoughts??

Thanks,

Re: Recalls & Engine Knock Info
Wow..what a thread. I'm doing some research for my next family vehicle and was/am thinking of a 2000 'Burb but now I'm rethinking my decision. Then I'll to a Ford site and I'm sure I'll read a bunch of problems with Ford also. Currently I have a Ford that has been a huge headache so that's why I wanted to go with Chevy but damn this piston slap problem.

Oh well, I'll keep reading. Thanks for all the information and keep it up it's good to know this stuff while trying to buy a new vehicle.

Can piston slap be mistaken for a noisey lifter or vise a versa

Re: Recalls & Engine Knock Info
Hi, I am new here. I bought a 05 Tahoe 5.3 about 6 months ago, and I love it. Today I bought a 06 1500 Silverado with a 4.8 extended cab. I gave up a Ford pickup for the new Chevy. The reason I am posting is that the piston slap you are hearing is not going to hurt the engine. I had a 2000 Ford Explorer with the 4.0 OHV engine, and it would make diesel like noise when idling. It was also a piston thing, but the engine ran very well, and I had no problems with it. The Jeep 4.0 inline 6 was a very noisy engine, but would last forever. You have to look at the overall picture of the truck to see how good GM is. I have a Chevy truck that I use for work, and it has 142,00 miles on it, and I like it alot. Enjoy!

Re: Recalls & Engine Knock Info
Well I have a 2000 Chevy 4x4 , Z71 that I bought new. Then added a Rancho lift kit , 35" M/T tires , Weld wheels , Warn Winch and about every other performance option avail. ( hypertech,K&L, ect.).
After a few thousand miles = the tick started , then the knocking started.
Today the truck has 155,000 miles on it and still "knocks like rocks".
GM gave me a 100,000 mile warranty on the motor.
I for one, dont think the owner should have to preform piston decarbonization on a vehicle , after paying megabucks for it. But depends on how proud you are of your ride.
My problem= decision . I want a new motor for my truck . The replacement will be a GM CRATE engine (new 5.3 - 0 miles). I wonder what the chances are that this new engine will develop the same problems ?
Scarey situation - too bad a 350 c.i. wont fit ( 383) yea! NO !

yes the new 5.3 will do the same thing.

i got a lead on a 6.0 for 3000 dollars, which hopefully i will drop in pretty soon in place of my perfectly good 5.3. if you're gonna do the engine swap, might as well make it rare and worth your while. theres nothing wrong with the one you've got...just knocks. mine (with 112,000 miles) clatters but doesnt knock...its fine.

This is a simply tool that I use all the time and has fixed some knocks that were just carbon buildup. Jeep V8's had this similar problem with excessive carbon buildup.
i used that cleaner and it helped but still it knocks when it is cold.

Re: Recalls & Engine Knock Info
I have not read all the posts on this subject, but I also have an '03 Z71 Tahoe. I had "lifter noise" at 12k when cold and an over run when I shut the engine off hot. I took into the dealership for a looksee and gave them the TSB on lifter noise. They took off the valve covers soaked the top end for 8 hours and no noise since.....I am now at 47k.

Re: Recalls & Engine Knock Info
I Also Had The Same Symptoms You Describe About The A\c And What I Found Was That The A\c Heat Exchanger Was Plugged Up And Simply Removing My Grill And Pressure Washing The Radiator Was A Huge Help. Bugs And Small Rocks Accumulate In The Cooling Fins And Cause A Loss Of Airflow From The Stock Fan When Idling Or Sitting At A Light. But As Soon As You Speed Up The Air Is Forced Across The Whole Area Of The Radiator And Provides Enough Airflow To Cool The A\c System. Another Idea Is A Stiff Bristle Brush To Remove Bugs/rocks. Be Careful Not Too Bend The Cooling Fins. When I Finally Was Happy That It Was Clean I Bought A 20$ Recharge Shot From O-reilly And It Has Blown Cool Ever Since.
Hope This Helps Some And May Save You A Trip To The A\c Shop In The Future. A Sidenote I Remember As A Kid In South Florida During Lovebug Season Everyone There Seemed Like Had A Regular Window Screen Attached Across Their Radiator To Prevent Overheating And Keep Those Swarms Of Bugs Out Of Their Cooling Fins.

Re: Recalls & Engine Knock Info
Mine has a knock and from pulling the pan off I found the #5 and 6 rods had too much side clearance and is slapping back and forth on the crank and the number 5 rod looks bent/warped but won't know more until I get the engine out

I drive the truck everyday with my foot to the floor but all it does is runs strong and the knock isnt bad enough to hear from the cab...actually most people probably dont even hear it, it's not that loud yet

Re: Recalls & Engine Knock Info
Piston slap is normal in these truck due to having a short piston with no skirts. It will not hurt anything just annoying
