Re: Recalls & Engine Knock Info
I'm having the same problems with my 02 5.3. It knocks like a mofo when I'm towing and it downshifts. It's going into the dealer soon. It just topped 80K miles. I figured I just beat on it too much. I tow with it 80% of the time.

Re: Recalls & Engine Knock Info
I've got an '02 Silverado with the 5.3L Vortec. About 50% of cold start-ups produce a tapping noise that to me sounds like a bad lifter. The knock will only stop after about 15 - 30 seconds of actually driving the truck, i.e., putting the engine under a little load.

You can let it idle, or even rev it slightly for 2 - 3 minutes before driving it, but it will still knock until the engine gets driven with a load on it. The knock will then go away after 15 - 30 seconds.

Does this sound like a bad lifter or the above-mentioned piston ring carbon issue?

I though it was just a weak lifter that was leaking down overnight

I also use royal purple 5/30 and 91 octane and have this same sound knock in my 5.7...I never get it on start up I get it sometimes when I jump on the gas from a roll, what could this be? Sounds like a rattle can being shook real fast..

I have a 2000 Silverado 5.3L w/ 110,000 miles on it, I have the same engine knock for about 5-10 min. upon cold start. I also have a loss of power upon cold start as well, especially when the trans. is shifting from 1st to 2nd. It almost feels like it's gonna' die. Any thoughts?

Re: Recalls & Engine Knock Info
My 02 tahoe with 85k miles, using 5w30 mobil 1 and 87 octane Shell knocks at startup just like my 03 avalanche 2500 with 45k miles, same oil and same gas. it goes away when its warmed up, but the first thing my father in law asked me when I got the avalanche last year was "Is that thing a diesel?"

carbon build-up my a. Just another stupid excuse from gm trying to cover up a poorly designed motor.

Re: Recalls & Engine Knock Info
I have a 98 (5.7) Sierra with 195k & a 01 (4.8) Sierra with 124k, both have the same cold start tick or knock and have always had it since almost new. Neither engine will use any oil or smoke but the difference with the 01 is will not knock at idle, just when u pepper the gas you will hear it the after about 30 sec's to a minute its gone. The 98 will knock after startup at idle also while driving for about a min or two. The outside temp has to be pretty cold (maybe 45 degrees or colder) for this to happen.

I have read everywhere that GM say's " This is not a problem " but anything that tick's, knocks, scrapes ect is wear. I don't think its carbon I think its the change from hot to cold & aluminum pistons. Am I Crazy?

Another thing, both of my trucks have always had a slight spark knock when using low octane fuel, the 89 octane corrects this...HMMMMM, maybe it is carbon...At this mileage I would be afraid to decarbonize them.

I guess I will just drive em till the wheels fall off then buy another. No matter how you look at it, coulda been worse, could own a Ford

Re: Recalls & Engine Knock Info
I have an 03 2500HD 8.1 that has been slapping since 9K, (almost 50k now) same story at the dealership considered "normal" so being the tactful individual that I am, I asked him if the noise is normal should I bring in my Burb because it didnt make noise. He didnt find it as funny as I did anyways....I use Royal Purple and it doesnt help the noise issue at all.

Re: Recalls & Engine Knock Info
sounds like you have some sticky lifters. use a little oil additive (like AC/Delco's stuff) just to keep it free moving and out of aural range.

Re: Recalls & Engine Knock Info
maybe try using 10W30 could help too. i use 10W in the summer and 5W in the winter. my engine sounds a lot smoother when i use them this way. 5W seemed to be just too thin for the heat coming from my engine and the heat from the outside

Re: Recalls & Engine Knock Info
I have an '01 with a 5.3, 117k miles. Mine does it for just a couple minutes on start up. My LS1 does it very slightly, not as noticable as my truck. My truck runs great, has good power, and gives me no problems. I run Mobil 1 10w30 and it doesn't use oil. I'm used to it now.

I have an 2001 5.3L w/ 66K that had always had the slap on cold starts. Switched to a 10W synthetic AMSOIL and good oil filter and haven't heard a thing in months I think a heavy oil may be worth a try. >>>just my two cents<<<<

Re: Recalls & Engine Knock Info
if your goin to wyotech (lucky f***er) get a new cam and a set of lifters. usually the lifters come with the cam (not on the 96-98 OBS) and now you have a full world class garage at your disposal and you get a little extra juice from your Gen III motor.

Re: Recalls & Engine Knock Info
yeah a performance cam is what i meant. and hopefully everything works out well for you man. wyotech is my dream school, like harvard for the book learning types. how mch did your enrollment cost and all the other stuff, if you don't mind me askin? if it is not astronomical i might be able to go in a couple of years.

Re: Recalls & Engine Knock Info
Anyone got the 6 yr/100,000 mile xtended warranty on their out of warranty truck lately for knocking or other issues? Mine is an 04 (warranty ran out last month)with the 5.3 and ticks a bit at start up and I am just starting to hear the steering klunk that many speak of. It only has 27,000 miles on it now. Is the steering klunk a recall?
