Re: Recalls & Engine Knock Info
Bought our 01 K2500HD new in Feb 2001, 20K later the 6.0 was sounding like crap. Took to dealer and they fixed it under warranty. Don't know exactly what they did, but it's up to 75K now with no noises.

My wife's 3.4L chevy equinox just developed piston slap. What a piece of junk engine. I told her to trade it off and buy a diesel. No more crap gas engines.

Re: Recalls & Engine Knock Info
my 01 silverado with the 4.8 clacked BAD no matter what grade or brand of gas was in it. at 94k my engine started sounding like a piston was about to come out of the head so i put restore in it. it quieted down quite a bit but i still traded it in since i was ready for a new truck anyway(i feel sorry for whoever bought that truck). i ran the piss out of my silverado too which included redlining it as soon as it started back in my younger years. i now have an 06 sierra with the 4.8 and no knocking yet. one thing i learned is that using an oil filter with an anti-drainback valve on it keep it from clattering when cold. i use quaker state 5w30 with a mobil 1 filter. i usually run 87 octane. exxon/mobil gas is the worst as far as pinging in my experience. i usally run shell because it's convenient in my area.

Question Re: Recalls & Engine Knock Info
I have a 2000 Silverado 1500 with a 5.3 that has had the piston slap/clatter at startup since it had about 70K on it. I've run the factory recommended 5W-30 conventional oil and AC Delco filter on it the entire time I've owned it. It now has about 165K and still knocks/clatters at startup the same way it did at 70K... I do agree that it does hurt GM's reputation from a consumer perception view (I sure as h**l wouldn't buy a new vehicle that made that noise!) However, with the miles and hours that are on my particular pickup at this point, I guess I can't really see that the noise affects the durability and longevity of the engine from a technical standpoint. Does anyone have a confirmed "kill" due to the infamous and chronic cold startup knock/clatter?

Re: Recalls & Engine Knock Info
i have a 2000 silverado with the 5.3L and i had 156,000K with the piston knock. while driving the connecting rod bent and smashed the piston into the crank shaft. so i bought another 5.3L and put this engine in and i have the same problem with cold knocking every one else is having. im kind of pissed off that GM just pushes the problem aside and wont address it but what can you do?

Re: Recalls & Engine Knock Info
GM propaganda says the bad pistons of the '00-'02 5.3 engines were replaced with "New and Improved" pistons for the model year 2003. HAH !!
I bought my 2003 Silverado 5.3 new and the engine has knocked since about 10k miles and puffs out a big cloud of smoke every time I first start it .... summer or winter. I use Mobile 1 10w40 in summer and 5w30 in winter.

Re: Recalls & Engine Knock Info
Hi all, new here from Sweden. have a 2001 Chevy Tahoe,30K on the clock, love it! but ofcourse with the dreaded piston slap.
Well here in Europe weve only got either 95 octane and 98 octane and Ive used them both, mainly the 98 and guess what?
it still slaps a little so I dont think the octane matters.
My concern is: will it get a lot worse by milege or will it eventually break down?

Re: Recalls & Engine Knock Info
'00 GMC Sierra 5.3L with 110K miles. Sounds like a diesel on start up (no matter what temperature) and lasts for a good minute or two. It's also accompanied by the ticking sound which does not go away until the truck is driving for at least half a minute to several minutes. I have most of the records of the oil changes and other maintenance done to this truck and it's been well kept. My 2.2L which I beat nearly to death sounds much healthier than this engine.

Re: Recalls & Engine Knock Info
If they do address it... why has it taken almost 8 years to do so...

my knock started at 70,000 and now i can never get a serious buyer to look at my cherry truck with a diesel knock

That is the one thing that pisses me off the most about it. It's also lame when you are showing people your truck and they always ask, "Is it supposed to sound like that?". Now if only I was putting out 660 ft-lbs of torque to go along with the horrible noise.

Re: Recalls & Engine Knock Info
Some news here!

SAAB motorcorporation in Sweden are the main dealers of Chevrolete.
I spoke to a very high ranking civil-engineer at Saab-Chevy and he told me that piston-slap, too small pistons etc are very common amongst high-performance cars, V8, V6 etc. Even the new super expensive Mercedes 500 have got it. Differance is Mercedes have been clever enough to conceal the noise by building a thick cover above all, theyre not so tight-fisted with money perhaps.
