98 350 No Start Issues.
Well the other day I was driving home and after making a right turn my truck felt weird so I looked down and the RPMS were fumbling around and then it popped a couple times and died. Then I tried to start it after like 10 minutes after checking everything, it cranked but would not fire.
So far I have checked and have good spark at the coil, fuel pressure, I also poured a shot glass worth of gas down the intake and tried to crank it and nothing but a couple of "sneezes" and soft pops like it tried to fire but could not.
Any other Ideas Guys? I am gonna check compression tonight as soon as I get a ride to the store to pick up a compression tester.

mine did something close to that once sp i'm gonna take a stab at it and say its either the fuel filter or the crank sensor

Re: 98 350 No Start Issues.
I was thinking either the cam or crank sensor so I will check that, is there any way to verify that the crank sensor works?

Unplug the timing advance... does it fire? (Check your timing)

Re: 98 350 No Start Issues.
Think I would go with cam or crank sensor.

Re: 98 350 No Start Issues.
Timing is Computer Controlled.
Would My tach workk if either the cam or crank sensor were out?
Also what about a FPR or Ignition switch, could that cause this, those were just some more things I found searching the site.

Re: 98 350 No Start Issues.
Guessing here but tach should be controlled off of the dizzy or cam.
FPR could be leaking into the vac line, but it should still start. Worth looking into though.
Don't know about the ignition though. I wouldn't think so.

Re: 98 350 No Start Issues.
When you turn it over does it seem to turn over faster , I am guessing it Jumped its timing or bad timing chain ,wouldnt hurt to look into if all else fails

Re: 98 350 No Start Issues.
I dont think it cranks faster.
Also I have an after market alarm, how does this kill the truck normally?

Re: 98 350 No Start Issues.
pop the number 1 spark plug out and find your timing marks on the crankshaft , stick a long Clean screw driver or something in the sparkplug hole and Turn it over MANUALY with a Good size ratchet and socket and wait and feel for the piston to come to the complete top and than look at your timing marks and see where the timing is. and that will tell you if it jump timing.
Note - thats just a faster way of checking it , it could be something totaly different but its worth a shot.

Re: 98 350 No Start Issues.
My old 1996 350 did that samething. After I took the engine out I noticed my cam shaft snapped in half.

Re: 98 350 No Start Issues.
you can check to see if the crank sensor is working properly with a scan tool. There has been alot of problems with this sensor gm made a tsb about it.

Re: 98 350 No Start Issues.
Pull # 1 plug out . Place finger over hole . Have helper click engine over to see where compression stroke (firing) is. Then see if the timing marks line up (0 degrees). Pull dist cap and see where the rotor is pointing( #1 or somewhere else). If you're getting spark the cam and dizzy are probably OK . The tach is driven off the ignition coil not the dizzy . How many miles on the motor? Sounds like timing chain . If the cam jumped you should be getting a crank /cam out of sync code .
