Crazy Distributor Gear Wear

Well I found my problem to the no start issue I'm pretty sure. I was changing my rotor and realized that the distributor had a lot of play so I pulled it out and what do you know.

My question is, will my camshaft look like that on the other end or will it be alright after a new gear?

Onto the Carnage

Re: Crazy Distributor Gear Wear

The cam is hardened because its a roller and if the correct distributer gear isn't used the gear will fail. Make sure the replacement gear is for a roller cam.

Re: Crazy Distributor Gear Wear

lm thinking it wont look good...ld be wondering where all the metal off the gear got off to...if it were me ld be considering a rebuild or swap at this point...not exactly the reply your looking for this mornin...know there are diffrent gears..ie brass or steel ect and most cams are pretty selective as to which should be used with which...not shure of details....
imagine that may be orriginall dizzy...may just be that time for a rebuild...
you should also fill out your sig with year engine make ect so folks have a idea what thier dealin with

Re: Crazy Distributor Gear Wear

look in the dist hole, if the cam gear looks ok, drain the oil, leave the plug out, and dump a couple quarts down the dist hole, and a couple in the fill hole(each valve cover, if possible), then put the plug back in, change filter, then fill, once you get the proper gear for the roller cam, change the oil in about a week, if you are lucky, it will last many more miles

Re: Crazy Distributor Gear Wear

That happened to me as well. My truck had 85,000kms on it, when it started popping and bucking gentley when at cruise speed. I changed teh dizzy gear. My truck is over 400,000kms now on teh same cam gear. I would worry about teh cam TOO much.
Change oil on schedule.

peace

Re: Crazy Distributor Gear Wear

Sorry I took so long getting back but I have been busy as hell with school and work and have not had time to work on the truck.

What would cause wear like this? and why did it just die all of a sudden and not at least start running crappy?

Pauly was your worn that bad?

I really hope my cam is ok.

My dizzy gear was worn worse that that one, mine was on the verge of breaking.
The only indicator on my truck was that it would pop slightly when at cruise speed, felt like a miss.
There is a distributer mod that allows more oil to fall onto the cam gear. Insufficient oiling, bad design/manufacturing of teh dizzy gear can all come into play.
Why it didnt show symptoms 1st, i really dont know.

The good thing about this whole situation is that the camshaft is made from induction hardened steel, so the roller lifters wont gall into the lobes of the cam. Since teh cam gear is so hard, a special dizzy gear made from softer melonized metal. The idea is to have the dizzy gear wear instead of the camshaft gear(for obvious reasons).

this is an EXCELLENT billet replacement dizzy for the 96-02 Vortec 305,350 and 454.

You are supposed to be able to grind in vertical grooves into the dizzy to alow for better dizzy gear oiling.

Re: Crazy Distributor Gear Wear

I just ended up replacing my dizzy gear to cure my misfire cyl 3 problem. It wore out at 201000 miles, how many miles are on your truck?

Re: Crazy Distributor Gear Wear

I'm starting to get a slight miss at cruise speed also. Only really noticable cruising in 3rd, not OD. My check engine light is on P1345. What distributor gear is everyone putting back in. I would like something a bit stronger than stock because my motor has a supercharger on it.

Re: Crazy Distributor Gear Wear

Also what size gear? It looks like most are either .500 or .491.

Re: Crazy Distributor Gear Wear

Thanx Pauly

Is everyone getting their replacement gears at the stealership?

Would it be worth while to just get the billet Accel distributor? It would have a more common .491 gear. The Accel comes with an iron gear, is this okay?

I'm only wanting to pull the distributor once to replace any parts, so I can minimize down time.

Thanx again
