93 chevy truck skipping and popping

My truck skips and pops when giving it alot of gas like pulling out or going up big hills. We took of the cat in case that was plugged up. We are pulling our hair out. I am beginning to hate this truck.

Check your timing.
Wouldn't hurt to put a fuel filter on it, and a fuel pressure guage.

Not only does it skip but it bucks me all the way up the hill. At first if I let up on the gas it would stop but lately it keeps doing it. However it doesn't do it all the time, but most of the time. Of course it doesn't do it as much when my husband drives it. He now thinks I'm crazy. Please help.

We did put a fuel filter on it about 6 months ago or less. I called the garage and he said he can't get it in for a week to check the fuel pressure. He also said it could be a hundred different things including the knock sensor.

Is the truck showing a SES light? If you do check your codes with a paperclip on the OBD port, if not it's more guessing. If your fuel pump is running with enough pressure and your injectors are firing fine, it could still be several other things. Try unplugging the vacuum line to the egr, that would rule out if the egr is at fault.

the engine light has been going on and off for months. I go about 10 miles before it comes on, but it doesn't always come on after it stutters. I forgot to say that it gets a weird smell when it's doing it.

You need to check to see what codes you have.
You need to jump the two ternimals on the data connector under the dash, the pic below are of my 89 Camaro, but it's the same connector, and the same terminals.
You can see that I just used a short piece of wire, paper clip works too.
Jump the two terminals, then put the key in, turn it forward to run, do not start.
May take a second, but the engine light will flash. Once it starts to flash start counting. It will flash once, pause, the flash twice. Long pause, then flash once, pause, twice, long pause. That is a code 12. It will flash that 3 times, nothing wrong, just means it's in diagnostic mode, so you can read the codes.
Then say you have a code 24, after code 12 flashes 3 times, their will again be a long pause, then it will flash twice, pause, 4 flashes, long pause, and it will repet two more times.
If 24 is the only code you have it will repeat code 12 to show you that it all your codes. Then it will restart with code 12 again 24, 12.
If you have more then one code it will be something like 12, 24, 32, 44, 12.
If so you would then have a code 24, code 32, and code 44.

I just ran the codes they are as follows 12, 32, 35, 42, 54, 12. What do they mean? I know my husband has a book some where but I'm not sure where.

I'm not sure, what then mean, I am pretty sure if you pm Neumannzz he will give you a web page that list them. Don't remeber what it was, or you could search for something like engine codes or trouble codes, he has posted several times, about where to find them.
Or you can wait and someone should be able to tell you.
I would find it for you but my internet is extremely slow right now.

They have OBD1 books at all parts stores. Just ask them to show you that book, it includes all the codes. The first code 12 is just letting you know the computer is working correctly. The main culprit would be code 32 because it is the first code and that code will bring out the rest of the codes.

I just looked it up, code 32 is EGR valve failure and code 35 is IAC idle air control valve or idle error. I'm guessing it would be your EGR valve or a clogged vaccum line full of carbon buildup,new EGR valve about 45 bucks at the parts store

the code 42 actually will probably be the main problem. That is the knock sensor. Pretty easy to replace yourself, or it should be pretty cheap for a shop to do too. In most cases the EGR shouldn't be causing that problem. the 35 shouldn't cause the problem your describing, but it could make it idle wierd, I'm not real sure about that one. The 54 code could also be your problem. It deals with the fuel pump, so there could be something wrong there.

Edit: I just saw that it doesn't show a code 35... wierd. That should be the IAC valve.
