Lost all oil pressure TBI OBS
so i was driving into my gfs complex and all of a sudden my "check guages" light comes on and i see i have 0 oil pressure. So i shut the truck off and pulled over. I checked the oil level and there was nothing on the dipstick. I checked underneath my truck and there was no oil anywhere. I quickly started it back up to see if maybe it was a guage problem and it made a weird noise so i shut it back off right away.
Im assuming my oil pump died. Is there anyway to check this without getting completely involved in a replacement project? Also, is there a way to remove the oil pan and pump without raising the engine. I don't have a hoist for that.
Last thing, is my engine ****ed? i shut it off as soon as I realized i had no pressure.
i have a 93 k1500 TBI OBS 350
thanks.

Re: Lost all oil pressure TBI OBS
fill it up with oil and try again . Don't keep starting it with no oil showing on the dipstick . Did the drain plug fall out ?(seen that before )

Just because you show no oil pressure and there is no oil on the dipstick doesnt mean there is no oil in the truck. You could still have a quart or 2 in there. I'm not saying to start or run the truck, But you probably started leaking or burning more oil. Throw a couple quarts of oil in it and check again. Then check under the truck for leaks completly.

Re: Lost all oil pressure TBI OBS
ok, let me help here...you don't see oil because you aren't leaking it. you're using it. it happens. honestly, all vehicles use SOME amount of oil...but newer motors will not use a noticeable amount in the 3-6,000 mile intervals most people change the oil in. did you ruin your motor? nope...didn't even hurt it...i promise ya.
now, let me tell ya a couple stories about my '91 K1500 in my sig. it was the exact same truck as yours drivetrain-wise except for you having the 4L60E and it having a 700R4. it leaked oil AND used it. had 180k HEAVILY neglected miles on it when i got it. i would put oil in it...run for about 3 weeks-1 month and i would see the gauge start to drop to 0 or close when i'd stop too fast or take a sharp corner...then i'd add oil...was it smart? probably not...but it worked for me...
another time, i was pulling a '97 Monte Carlo i got back home and ran it so low on oil the lifters were "knocking". i thought i had cooked it...nope...put oil in it and what do ya know? lifters pumped up and no more issues!
yet another time...ran it low enough the lifters were knockin again...thought it was done this time...nope...just needed some oil.
it didn't DIE until my friend ran it without oil for God knows how long (temp gauge had even gone up to 210-never went that high) and it locked up while he was RACING a car on the freeway...
so yea, these 350s are pretty resilient. i wouldn't be too worried.

Re: Lost all oil pressure TBI OBS
Okay I just checked the oil level and added some I was less than a quart low. I'm afraid to start the truck because last time it made a weird noise so I just shut it off. Do I need to change the oil pump and is there a way to test it?

Re: Lost all oil pressure TBI OBS
if it "made a noise" over a lifter knock (mild knock clearly in top end of motor) then the damage has been done. you aren't gonna hurt it worse by starting it. you can check the oil pump by hooking up a pressure gauge (or turning on the ignition so your factory gauge can work), pulling the distributor and, using a oil pump turning tool, spin the pump with an electric drill...if the gauge comes up, you're fine.
although, i wouldn't go through all that trouble. that engine is most likely just fine. just start it!

Re: Lost all oil pressure TBI OBS
well i added the oil, started it back up, and it ran fine and i had oil pressure again.
When i said it made a weird noise it wasn't a knock or tick it was just like the engine was struggling to rotate or something.
But w.e its fine now i guess.

Re: Lost all oil pressure TBI OBS
"nothing on the dipstick" thats bad bud you need oil in the oil pan. Run some seafoam thro the engine, change oil and youll be fine. If not drop the front diff, remove the oil pan and change the OIL pump its a 5-10 hour job depending on your skill level.
