My Christmas Gift
Every year I buy myself something for Christmas.
Last year I got myself a 65" Mitsubishi LED DLP.
The year before a KRL1022 toolbox from Snap On...
This has been ordered yesterday. Should be here in a few weeks.
Maximum power of 220A with 60% at 180A
Quick change over to gasless and TIG
I had the Snap On dealer throw in a $300 welding helmet, and I ordered all the TIG options.
I don't know how to TIG weld, but I can learn, in time.

Badass. Tig is though, lol. I'm sure you'll get the hang of it though.
Got any pictures of your toolbox?

Re: My Christmas Gift
looking forward to a product review. never seen a snap on welder in an industrial application. i hope you use it enough to get some good reviews. looks pretty small to be a dual inverter machine. i have never actually seen a constant voltage machine that can TIG as well. just stick. but then again i know it can be done. just didnt expect it in a small package. what kinda hood did you get? please tell me speed glas

I'm really looking forward to the TIG option, as I kinda sit around my garage or something you find crap you can weld up... I don't know if I'm just finding stuff to justify the purchase, or what. But now I've got a list, as well as a buddy has a jon boat that needs to get welded together.
I have no pictures of my toolbox.
But it's like this...
Cranberry color, but I've got the stainless top, and the stainless fronts, corners, and stainless pulls.
I don't really like my toolbox, and really for only two reasons...
One, the color, I hate it. I wanted black, he gave me a helluva deal. All my service carts and stuff are in black, so all my tool storage stuff would match. Now they don't.
Second, I bought the first toolbox my Snap On guy sold. And when he was taking it off the truck, he hit something, and put a pretty good sized dent in the side. I complained, he gave me $1000 back. I figured that was fair... But I told him in a few years I'm going to trade it in, and I want him to remember that I didn't do that.
I keep my toolboxes clean, I always have. I grease everything, I keep dust and junk off them. I don't put stickers on them. I like them to look nice, and everytime I come around the side of it I stare at the dent.
I also bought a $200 Snap On cover for my toolbox, that I use 24/7, so it doesn't get scratched or nicked or anything. My toolbox will be two years old in December, but it's in great shape. Never had a problem with it.
My first really nice toolbox, we had a yard guy that spilled three gallons of oil all over it. And then a few weeks later put a large two foot long and very deep scratch on the side. I was so angry I can't even describe it.
After the scratch I sold that toolbox two weeks later cause I couldn't even look at it anymore. I had a friend of mine that worked in a body shop come over and take the scratch out and repaint it, but it still didn't look perfect. I hated it.

If by industrial application, you mean my house... Well, yeah!
I had a buddy buy a bigger, better Snap On welder... And he has nothing but bad things to say.
That's their 350 AMP MuscleMIG, my buddy's is like that, except it's older, so it doesn't have that removable section with the controls. It's just all one unit.
His crapped out before a year was up, and Snap On wouldn't help him out. After a lot of screwing around, he got Snap On to replace it. But this guy has had a Snap On payment for 30 years, so he held a lot of water with Snap On.
He strongly advised me against buying a Snap On welder, and truth be told, I didn't think I'd buy one Friday morning either. But they literally just came out with this one, and the price was right.
I can't find the same exact welding hood I got him to throw in. It had a 6"X5" viewing area, if I remember correctly, auto darking with adjustable dark, light, and delay. Lithium battery and solar charged.
He wanted to give me sleeves and gloves, but to be honest, I've never welded with sleeves or gloves, and I have never worked with them, so when I do, I don't like it too much, I can't feel anything.
I am not a professional welder by any means, my welds look good and they are strong, but there is a huge difference between my welds and a professionals welds, and if you take one look, you'll see.
That being said, for being self taught, I weld pretty good. At work, we have to weld serial numbers on buckets and stuff, and I do that on a regular basis, and it's all very readable, so I'm very proud of that.
To me, welding is an art, everyone knows those old guys that were professional welders. And they can weld anything together.
My buddy's dad used to use the TIG welder in his garage and he'd weld aluminium foil on his thumb nail in front of us. I was always amazed at that.
But I want to go back to school for my welding certificate. Work will pay for it, and then I get a pay raise. So maybe now is a good chance.
EDIT: I forgot, I'll review it when it arrives, but it's getting dropped at work, and I've got to get my garage wired for 220V. My electrician buddy said he'll do it for a few beers, so it's just a matter of getting it done.

Re: My Christmas Gift
Sorry but I would never buy a snap-on welder, one of the restoration shops I worked at had a snap-on TIG, they're actually made by someone else, I can remember who anymore. But this thing was a POS I mean I can TIG decent, I went to school for it, but I dont like to brag, but welding with that welder made it look like I had just learned to weld the week before. I made about 3 welds on a roll cage before I felt that using that welder would cause the cage to be unsafe. The guy who actually owned the welder was able to do okay with it, but put him on the shop owned Miller syncrowave and he didnt weld, he created art.

Re: My Christmas Gift
Ha, I didnt even look at the pic all the way, on my screen all I could see was your text and the top half of the pic before I replied, it was cut off right above "MIG" and then I just hit the end button to get down to the box.

Oh yeah, Century was bought out awhile ago by Lincoln.
So Lincoln does make this welder, specifically for Snap On.
I've used Lincolns in the past with no problems... But we had an old service truck with a Hobart Handler on there, a fairly cheap welder, and that thing could handle anything, it was awesome.

Re: My Christmas Gift
if it is in fact a lincoln then it may still be good. i dont care for lincoln wire feeds though. chances are its just slightly upgraded century crap with the snap on logo put on it. hobart are great machines for weekend warriors as theyre cheap and they seem to last for awhile.

This Hobart handler we had at work was a 220V deal, it was small and it was cheap. I don't remember anything every breaking on it. But for the field it worked great. I don't know the specs on it either though.
I have never used a Lincoln wire feed. Actually, now that I think about it, I've never used a Lincoln MIG, only Lincoln arcs, and those worked great.
At the Cat dealer, out main welder was a large Miller. It was older, actually I can't even find a similar one on Miller's website. But the unit itself was pretty large. And that thing was awesome. I welded everything from thin sheet metal to 1/2" thick mild steel plates on machines with never a problem.
And the machine was what I called fool proof. I don't claim to be a great welder, I think I'm good at best, but this machine would make my welds look like a robot did them every time.
I could weld numbers and letters into machines (we welded all serial numbers into buckets for security reasons) and it made me look awesome.

If I remember Snap On wanted $2250 for it. I talked him down to $1900, and then he threw in a hood and some other stuff.
If you take off the cost of stuff he gave me, it's about $1300.
