Holiday trailer + quad? 240 lbs overloaded?
My dad finally found the trailer he likes, a 28 foot Dutchmen. Truck is a 2009 Chevy ECSB LTZ Z71.
619 - Trailer tong weight
5620 - Truck weighted in at
700 - quad
300 - people
----------------
= 7239 lbs.
The sales guy told us his truck would be 7000 lbs payload, this correct?
As long as we don't get stopped (rare around here) will it be ok on his truck?
We are assuming he will also need to put in airbags, anything else we should know/ tips?

What does the owners manual say for your truck if you use a weight distribution hitch? You can probably get one of those, and be under your limit buy 3-4000 lbs.

Re: Holiday trailer + quad? 240 lbs overloaded?
Over loaded is overloaded.
But you may be under a 7,000 pound pulling capacity. It all depends on engine, trans, rear gears, cooling system, 2wd, 4wd, ect...
But like sierra said look at a weight distribution hitch. That should raise your capacity enough that you are legal.

The 7000 lb. payload would be the trailer weight, ATV, and people. The truck weight does not matter. The tongue weight will be fine...what I'm concerned about is wind resistance with that truck. Even a 14' enclosed trailer that's empty will slow you down a lot just with wind resistance.

Re: Holiday trailer + quad? 240 lbs overloaded?
Yah I think you may want to consider the towing weight and wind resistance. I have towed a 20ft enclosed trailer while moving my gf and I personally wouldn't go any heavier than that. The truck did ok but I wouldn't go much more. Having said that it was a flat front 8.5ft wide 6.5 ft tall trailer i think but there was def a lot of wind resistance slowing it down even when empty.

Does it come with trailer brakes?

Yah I would make sure that the truck and trailer both have trailer brakes.

The salesman may have been talking about towing weight. My father in law has a 09 GMC 1500 and theGVWR on it is 6400lb.Your may be different. Look in your door jam and see what the GVWR is. That 700lb quad and tongue weight of the camper may put you way over the payload.

Re: Holiday trailer + quad? 240 lbs overloaded?
In all honesty.
You dad should have atleast a 3/4 ton. With that big of a trailer like others have said wind can be a pain. A dually will be alot more stable. As far as weight a 1 ton is overkill but the dual wheels are alot more stable.
Another thought is, you will lose bed space, but a 5th wheel will pull much better, you can pull more weight, and the hitches are much stronger.
If he decieds to go with a 5th wheel, I would suggest a diesel. Even with what he has now, a diesel will pull it much easier, and it will handle the weight better being either a 3/4 or 1 ton.

Re: Holiday trailer + quad? 240 lbs overloaded?
619 lbs. seems a little low for a 28 ft. trailer.

Yeah what's your point. I have a 21 ft 6000lb. trailer with a 750lb. tongue. Campers run 12 to 15 percent tongue weight. So like I said 619 seems low.

Re: Holiday trailer + quad? 240 lbs overloaded?
If you get a good equalizer hitch I don't see a problem.
With our '92 1500 ext. (with equalizer) we're always towing the following and we've had the quad in the back once or twice as well.
Trailer @ 5700 lbs & approx 650 lb tongue.
Quad in truck box @ 700 lbs.
People and dog @ 580 lbs.
Extra gear inside truck @ 150 lbs.
Firewood in truck box @ 400-600 lbs.
Total 7730 lbs.
Just last week I pulled a skid steer trailer with 2.5 cords of birch on it. Total weight approx 10,500 lbs. with an estimated tongue weight of 1000 lbs and no equalizer.

Just cause you can do it doesn't make it right. I personally don't think a couple of hundred pounds is going to break it though just depends where the load sits.

Actually I don't fail since the weight of unseasoned Birch is 4000lbs. to 5900 lbs. per cord so you need to do a little simple math.
10,500lbs was the minimum it would be since there was some Pine with it as well and Pine is only 3300 lbs./cord

you still fail for not realizing your ignorance in towing way over the capacity of a half ton pick up. kthanxbai

It's true that I may of failed for that, although I was fully aware of the type and size of that load and it was a short distance.
However this is a true FAIL!

Re: Holiday trailer + quad? 240 lbs overloaded?
Ok, and you still fail.
Pulling that much with a 1/2 ton is not smart. I will also be that you still have a factory hitch, which if you do is just stupid. I'm sorry but I don't know of any other way to put it, it's just stupid.
