Re: 1500 hd

Unless you are doing some kind of tractor or some other kind of pulling other than towing, you'll probably have no problems.

Re: 1500 hd

This thread was about a 1500 HD. Not about which is the best axle. My question was why did they make a semi floating 14 bolt? As far as the semi floating being stronger than the full floating, the full floating is stonger in design and GM could use stronger parts. It just makes sense to start out with a stronger axle and then add stronger parts.

jesus dude

they are both very good axles, and 14 bolt sf vs ff, ff is stronger. But for those who don't want hubs sticking out, the sf is still a great improvement over their 10 bolt IMO

if you're so worried about strength, why did you buy a truck that has the absolute bottom of the barrel drivetrain in it?

Re: 1500 hd

i comprehend that just fine. you're ranting and raving about strength, and you're driving a truck with the weakest drivetrain GM puts in a fullsize truck.

kind of ironic isnt it?

Re: 1500 hd

Back on topic.....

The 1500hd is very similar to a 2500hd with a 6.0. Some of the only differencs are, yes, the rear axle, and the the 2500hd sits higher and has a different front clip. The 1500HD also has the automatic transfer case, which I dont believe the 2500hd has. I believe there are also a few minor differences in the front suspension. The 1500hd has hydroboost and most other heavy duty features found on the 2500hd

Re: 1500 hd

The 1500HD is exactly the same as the regular 2500, as already stated. To answer the question, the reason for the SF axle is $$. It's much cheaper to manufacture a SF axle then a FF axle. This is passed onto the customer. The vast majority of people don't need a FF rear axle, so they are saved for the HD trucks. I'd say a good number of the guys with the HD trucks really don't need the strength they have, but if they want to buy it, it's their money.

Re: 1500 hd

as was pointed out by Stacy David on Gearz this weekend, the 14 bolt has the center support for the pinion to ride in like the 9 inch ford which makes it strong, do both 14 bolts have this feature?

No, only the FF version.

Re: 1500 hd

2500HD do come with the push bottom 4x4. The only ones ive seen that have the lever is the 8.1L woth the Allison, even then Ive seen a few 8.1L/Allison with push button.

If they put a FF in the 1500HD why make a 1500HD? Thats one of the point to buy a 2500HD, for the FF.
