Re: 4l80 in 73-87? Who's got one?

I have one installed in an 86 C10. This is with a regular SBC, not an LS series. I used the original crossmember and added a "tongue" with some C-channel for the trans mount. I had to notch the front a bit to clear the trans pan. The last pic is why I went with the 4L80E....

Edit: the crossmember is in the furthest back set of hole (for TH400's).

Re: 4l80 in 73-87? Who's got one?

I'm doing one as well . Moved the crossmember back like 3 1/16 " , from the TH400 holes , made some careful measurements and drilled new lower holes . Mine is an 85 CC Dually and has the upper braces for the crossmember . The frame is narrow enough that a right angle drill is tough to get in there so I used aircraft drill bits that are 12 " long . Ran them up thru the new lowers and drilled the top holes . The upper holes are not in line with the lowers so I used plenty of WD40 to lube the lower holes .

well i did the entire swap and then some...

i just made a x-memember for 20 bucks. i have a welder, chop saw, and the idea. its 2x2 16 or 14 gauge square tube. it doesnt hang down like the factory piece, and its easy as heck to make.. took about 10 minutes or so.

I'm trying to run a 91 RV 1 ton diesel harness with a 95 G van diesel ECM . Trans is out of the 95 G van diesel and the 91 RV harness , with the electronic speedo , should work .

modular93fox, you might considering adding some side plates to that crossmember. i have seen crossmembers built like that break the two welds you have hold ing the rear of the trans up.

I'm planning to build a simple controller for the trans. I'm planning to shift it manually via steering wheel mounted buttons. Line pressure and TCC will be controlled by MAP pressure. No automatic shifting, at least for a while.

i got some 1" by 1/8 flat bar i could lay over the weld (after i ground them down) and weld the flat bar over that? or are you talking about putting a piece of plate stock over the entire 2 pieces?
